Storytelling title: The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs

Name of contestant: Lim Jian Qiang (Year 4)

Good afternoon chairperson, honourable judges, timekeeper, teachers and my dear friends. Today, the
title of my story is “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs”.

There once was a very poor farmer. He lived in a filthy old house in Bintulu. His name was Phua
Chu Kang. Chu Kang hadn’t always been poor and dirty. He’d inherited a large and prosperous farm
from his father. But Chu Kang was a lazy man. He didn’t like work and take shower.

So over the years, he'd simply sold off his possessions. He'd sold almost everything his father had
given him. All he had left was a goose that never laid eggs and a rusty lantern.

“”Stop honking at me goosey. You haven’t laid a single egg and yet you still eat a lot! How am I going
to survive like this? (shooing the flies) 'I have no house, no food and no money and nothing left to sell...I
shall surely starve!'

Suddenly, Chu Kang heard a whisper echoing around the old house.
“”Chu Kang…oh…Chu Kang…”

Chu Kang (searching where the whisper was coming from)

“”What’s that sound? Did you hear it? Or was it just my imagination?”

“”Chu Kang…oh…Chu Kang…”

Chu Kang went close to the lantern and picked it up, putting his ear close to the lantern…and…

“”CHU KANG!”

“”Arghhh! My ear!”
The lantern was no ordinary lantern, it was a magical lantern. It was found and kept by his late father,
Alibaba!

He rubbed, rubbed, rubbed the lantern. A blue smoke slowly came out from the snout of the lantern and
out popped a blue genie!

“”Wh…wh…Who and what are you?” (Chu Kang looked at the genie with fright)

“”It is I, the blue genie! I’m here to make your dreams come true. What is that you wish for?”
“”I wish, I wish I could be rich! That's what I need to be happy!”
“”But first, you must do exactly as I say. One, clean this filthy place. Two, clean yourself up. Three,
feed the goose and take good care of it. Do all these chores every day and I shall grand you your wish.”

Then, the blue genie flew back into the lantern.

Chu Kang quickly grabbed his broom and he swept, swept, swept the floor.
He wiped, wiped, wiped the window.
He mopped, mopped, mopped the floor.

“”haaaaachooooo! Excuse me!”

Finally, the once a filthy old pigsty had turned into a clean shining place.
“(yawn) ”It’s time for bed. Goodnight goosey. (patting the goose and lie down on the floor)”

At this very moment, a magical thing happened! The goose suddenly stood up, waving its fluffy tail and
honked loudly.
“” honkkkkkkkk!!!”

The next morning Chu Kang awoke to a glittering dawn. It was so bright he had to shield his eyes. But
it wasn’t the sunlight shining, What do you think it was? You’re right! It was a gigantic, glorious...Golden
Egg!

'You clever girl! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! We'll be rich!

So off he went to market pushing the egg in an old wheelbarrow.

“” Music!”
“”I feel good,
I knew that I would now,
I feel good,
I knew that I would now,
So good, so good, I got you! Wo!”

He returned with a barrowful of food and a huge bag of coins.

That night, he patted his full tummy and said, ’That's what I need to be happy. (burp!)

Every day the same thing happened and every day Chu Kang counted his money. (take out the money)
Soon the farmer became a very rich man indeed. ( But as he grew rich, he grew greedy and still he wanted more.

One day, he had an idea. He looked at his goose and said,

'Why can't you lay more eggs each day? How I wish I could have all the golden eggs at once! Then I
would surely be happy.'

He was lazy to clean the pigsty so the goose stopped to lay egg. The next morning he ordered his cook
to kill the goose and open it up. Unfortunately, there was nothing inside the poor goose. There would be no
golden eggs again. And Chu Kang ended up back in his filthy old pigsty. The rats, cockroaches, flies and
mosquitoes loved to stay with him for he was too dirty. Not long after that, he fell sick. The mosquitoes kept
sucking his blood and soon, he got infected with dengue fever! He had no money to go to the doctor. And he
ended up dead in the filthy pigsty.

The moral value of the story is we should not be greedy and we should keep ourselves clean and
healthy. Thank you.
