CHAPTER 1: PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction:
Solid waste management is an emergent concern. Based on studies
made by the National Solid Waste Management Commission-Secretariat
based at the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), there is a daily
estimated 0.5 kilogram per capita waste generation in Metro Manila
alone. With an estimated population of 10.5 million, the total waste
generation in Metro Manila alone could run up to 1.95 million metric
tons per year. Of this magnitude of generated waste, only 73% are
collected daily by dump trucks, with the remaining 27% ending up in
canals, rivers, or any other space where garbage could possibly be
dumped into (Medrano, L.R., 2005).
With this huge numbers on hand, a paradigm shift on waste
management and disposal is not an option anymore; but a major
necessity. Research done by Medrano is dated way back 2005.
Technology has evolved humongous over a decade and two. Given with a
full assurance, the other face of modernity and industrialization has
considerably taking its big steps also; the wastes.

Background of the Study:
Waste can be, a something, that is damaged, defective, or
superfluous material produced by a manufacturing process (Merriam-
Webster Dictionary, 2017). According also to Merriam-Webster
Dictionary, waste can also be a material rejected during a textile
manufacturing; processed and used usually for wiping away dirt and
oil; it also refers to refuse from places of human or animal
habitation.
Solid waste is one of the most manageable type of waste. It was
made right after assumption; and segregating it is an easy task.
However, behavior on waste disposal has been a problem in Bulihan
Integrated Senior High School students. In this research, the
researchers will determine the pre-existing solid waste management
program being regulated in the said school and checking on better
tweaks on how to somehow improve or modify it.
Solid waste management has been implemented in schools since time
in memoriam as part of the old government program “War on Waste”.
Currently, solid waste program is focused on waste segregation as its
primary behavior principle.
More usual on offices, schools and other establishments, solid
waste management in considering putting up recycle bins.

Significance of the Study:

Waste is not something that should be discarded or disposed of
with no regard for future use. It can be a valuable resource if
addressed correctly, through policy and practice with rational and
consistent waste management practices there is an opportunity to reap
a range of benefits.
This research study is conducted in order for the researchers
contribute to maintain cleanliness and healthy-living environment for
the proper segregation of waste in school especially in Bulihan
Integrated Senior High School that has a problem with a proper
segregation of waste in this past years. It is expected to benefit on
the following:

 Students-this research study will also contribute an ide to

young minds and it will also motivate the students to
explore and contribute in developing proper segregation of
waste in school.
 Future Researchers-this Senior High School students’ thesis
could serve as a reference to those who will be interested
to continue or conduct further research regarding the
topic.
 Utility workers-this study will also be a big benefit for
the utility workers for it will bring ease in their daily
work.
 Bulihan Integrated Senior High School Department-regulated
and proper solid waste management will put the BISHS
Department in a properly waste sgregated establishment.
