TEXT: Course Based on Conceptual Physics by Paul G. Hewitt Berkil.ray@gmail.com

Physics DESCRIPTION:
Physics seeks to describe and predict natural events by seeking the relationships between motion, force, energy and
time. Physics is at the root of all types of engineering -mechanical, electrical, nuclear, chemical, etcetera. This course
will discuss the basics in fields of physics such as kinematics, dynamics, electricity, optics, nuclear physics, etcetera
while not delving deeply into mathematical computation.. The number one priority in this course is to learn how to
think critically, in a scientific manner, about the physical environment. This course will follow Georgia Performance
Standards. There will be many labs to explore the concepts of physics. At the beginning of each chapter a sheet of
objectives, homework problems, and labs will be handed out. Every chapter will be followed by a test. The test will be
derived from the objectives.

Topics Covered

1. Introduction, Syllabus and Pre-Test 2. Science of Physics and Linear Motion

3. Forces and Laws of Motion 4. Momentum and Energy
5. Center of Grav.& Angular Moment 6. Special Relativity
7. Waves and Sound 8.Light
9. Electricity 10..Magnetism & EM Induction

SUPPLIES:

Calculator (Scientific), Colored Pencils, 3-Ring Binder, Composition Notebook

OUTSIDE READING:

Students are encouraged to read a book pertaining to physics or physics related concepts. While in the course we will
encounter several fascinating physicists who possess profound insight and wonderful theories such as: Stephen
Hawking, Michio Kaku, and Kip Thorne to name a few. They have all authored several books, articles, and given
interviews pertaining to the nature of physics and the universe. For those who are interested, you may choose to read
one of their works and give a presentation to your contemporaries outlining the major ideas and new discoveries
presented in the work. Credit for this assignment will count as bonus.

Grading:

Grades are weighted as follows:

30%: Tests/Quizzes 25%: Class/Homework 15%: Final Exam
30%: Labs & Projects
Quizzes: Quizzes are given frequently and may or may not be announced. A review immediately
prior to the quiz is at my discretion.
Homework: Homework will be given on a regular basis and will be collected and/or checked on
the assigned due day. Students may turn in homework 1 day late for 50% off of grade.

Notebooks: Notebooks are due the day of the test.

Projects: Two or more projects will be assigned throughout the semester. Projects will be
accepted late with a 25% off each day late. No projects will be accepted after 3rd day.
Tests: You will be given a minimum of a two day notice prior to each test.

Retests: Students scoring below a 70% on an exam are required to take a retest in which they are
provided 1 day of targeted class remediation with a max score of 75% on the retake. Students
scoring 70-74% have the option to take the retest or participate in extension activities with the
remainder of the class.

MAKE UP WORK:

Cobb County Policy will be followed as it pertains to make/up work. If you are absent it is YOUR
responsibility to make-up the work.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating is considered a serious matter. Any student who is involved in cheating/plagiarism will receive a
grade of zero on the material, an unsatisfactory in conduct, and his/her parents will be notified.

For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:

 Copying anyone's answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work or homework
assignments
 Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper
credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by
the author and claiming the work as his or her own, i.e., plagiarism.
 Looking onto another student's paper during a test or quiz.
 Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's
permission.
 Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected.

CLASSROOM BLOG:

See the class blog for any work and/or updates you might have missed, as well as supplemental
information.

Tutoring: Wednesday & Friday 3:30-4:30 in room 522 or by appointment

DISCIPLINE: First and foremost rule is RESPECT! Respect yourself, your peers, your instructors, and
the equipment in the room. All Kennesaw Mountain Policies will be adhered to in this room and enforced
consistently across the board.
