Tubing Material
- Sour Gas: resistance to H2S, > low hardness, stress relieved, > J55, C75, C95.
- Sweet Gas: CO2, provisions for inhibition or appropriate material selection, > L80 13 Cr
- internal erosion (flow couplings above and below turbulence inducing components)
Dimensional data?
Consider:
- Inside and outside diameter (ID/OD)
Tension:
- Loading due to own weight and retrieving certain packers.
- Actual stress < 80% of tubing yield strength
Compression:
- Loading when setting certain packers.
Collapse:
- when annulus pressure is high and tubing is empty
• design by assuming that annulus is full of liquid, while the tubing is empty and has
maximum tubing head pressure at surface (i.e. CITHP)
Burst:
- when tubing pressure is high, and annulus is empty
Key Message
Tubing is not just another “piece of pipe”!
- special equipment manufactured to high standards in order to, withstand high stresses,
pressures and temperatures often in a corrosive environment for long periods.
- Failure to select and run the right Tubing can result in expensive workovers and even
possible loss of the Well.
