INDIGENOUS PEOPLE’S MONTH NARRATIVE REPORT

Indigenous people’s also known as first peoples, native people (Tumandok) are
ethnic groups that are descended from and identify with the original inhabitants of a given
Region. Sitio Maytaraw, Dalagsaan Libacao, Aklan is one of the place who belong to an IPs
Community. Maytaraw is the farthest sitio iof Libacao, Aklan and the one of their traditiona
wedding is called “ HUNGAW” by Aklan- Bukidnon tribe whereas children ages 13- 14 years old
are married off. It is said that children involve in this tradition doesn’t know or have glimpse with
their respective partners until the day of the arranged marriage. Lack of Education is given as a
reason for marrying off children at such a young age.

Through the years native people preserve their tradition thru using their different
tradition such as Barok, Samplayo or War Dance, Binanog or Handkerchief dance, Sarswela
(Singing while dancing) and Komposo . Maytaraw Primary School Celebrates Indigenous People’s
Month on the 5th day of October 2017.The teaching staff, pupils, and parents were excited to
witness the celebration.

To formally start the program Mrs. Desiry M. Dalupines, Kindergarten Teacher lead
the prayer followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem conducted by Ms. Ma.
Lorena P. Martinez – Grade VI adviser/ TIC and the opening Remarks was also given respectively.
Mrs. Desiry M. Dalupines gave her message about the indigenous Peoples’ Month celebration.
After the message the parents as well as the pupils showcase their talents in singing and dancing.
Mrs. Eling Dalupines one of our guest also a member if Indigenous shows her talents. She perform
first, sarswela; wherein singing while dancing accompanied by a guitar played by Mr. Ali Nicor.
The Kuracha is one of the dance in the said place wherein they enjoyed it while performing the
said dance. It was performed by Mrs. Eling Dalupines together with her daughter Mrs. Elita
Dalupines. Mrs. Gigi Dalupines the PTA Vice President and an active leader in Maytaraw shows
the best in singing the “Komposo” entitled “Pedro” with string instrument guitar played by Mr.
Jonito Bajoyo – PTA President. Another cultural traditiona dance Barok was perform by the
selected pupils of Maytaraw Primary School. Then it was followed singing the Komposo entitled “
Estong” by Joshua Dalupines and also th presentation was ended in singing another Komposo
song rendered by Melay Dalupines.

The program formally ended with the inspirational message of the TIC. The Indigenous
People’s month celebration marked another history of the community of Sitio Maytaraw,
Dalagsaan Libacao, Aklan. It gives them a courageous spirit to continue culture; not just in dance;
above pursuing the spirit as Indigenous People.
