Alternating current machines & transformers are the building blocks of most present-
day power and industrial systems. Transformers and induction motors are
inseparable parts of today’s modern power system and industrial loads. Even in
futuristic cars and vehicles and other mechanical engines are likely to be replaced by

electric machines. Also, transformers are integral parts in the transmission and
distribution of a power system. So, this course aims to give the students a clear
understanding on important equipment like transformer, and widely and commonly
used alternating current machines in residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
Energy Conversion I is designed to develop fundamental knowledge regarding the
basics of transformer and induction motor as well as to design and implement
systems involving these two devices. This course begins with reviewing of the
fundamental concepts of electromagnetic theories, magnetic circuits and basic
concepts on machines priorly introduced covered in physics and circuit courses. This

course then introduces transformers to develop a detailed insight idea about
practical aspects, modeling, and analysis of transformers. Lastly, induction motors
are introduced with a view to enabling the students to develop the basic idea on
induction motors, to determine different parameters of the motor and to analyze
induction motor performance under real life environment.
After the end of this course, the students will be able to:
