Monday

9:15am – 11:30am
*consider: bathroom break at 1hr mark around 10:15am – not a hard and fast time

-Attendance, explanation of specific classroom rules (respect, listening skills, democracy). Describe what
Friday’s informance will be – a presentation on our process and the result of our work, including a
preview of the show.

-Explanation of what a musical is (what makes a good musical? What can you find in every musical/every
story? Eg. Conflict, heroes and villains, setting, a beginning, middle and end, etc).

*Begin outlining. Following MAY occur out of order*

-Introduce, discuss, and vote on type of genre. What is a genre? Have students name some genres and
examples from stories they know, and suggest some if they get stuck.

-Introduce, discuss, and vote on type of conflict. What is conflict? Why does every story need conflict?

-Discuss characters—protagonists and antagonists. Inform students this must be an ensemble piece,
with many characters working together. Who are our heroes? Our villains? What do the heroes need to
accomplish?

-Discuss scenes and songs. Every good story has a beginning: characters and conflict are introduced, a
middle: the action grows and the stakes rise, and an ending: action climaxes and is resolved.

*What happens in part 1, part 2, and part 3? What characters appear in each scene?

*We also need to include music: how many songs? What does each song accomplish in the
scene, what does it add to the scene?

Writing a scene:

-Who is in the scene?

-What needs to be accomplished? / What do the characters want?

-What is preventing the characters from achieving their goal?

-What are each of the characters like? (Leader, comic relief, nerd, wise sage) What flaws prevent them
from reaching their goal? (Fear, insecurity, selfishness, bad temper)
