DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED SEMI-AUTONOMOUS FIRE

FIGHTING MOBILE ROBOT

ABSTRACT

The design and implementation of this project is mainly based on control of the semi-
autonomous fire fighting mobile robot.. So this concept is proposed to design something that can
make humans life easier and comfortable. The project, which is the endeavor to design a fire
fighting robot, comprises of a machine which not only has the basic features of a robot, but also
has the ability to detect fire and extinguish it.

In this regard, instead of spraying water manually to the fire flames, we can use fire
sensors for locating the area where the fire flames are existed and according to that water can be
sprinkled over the fire flames automatically avoiding human interference. To prove the theme
practically, a prototype module is constructed over a four wheeled chassis and an extendable
type of ladder in the form of sliding channel is constructed which is arranged over this trolley.
The mechanical transmission section is designed with DC motors. At the top end of the ladder,
with the help of another semi circle mechanism, five fire sensors are placed at different positions
for automatically sensing the fire. To the same ladder at the top using another motor, the
sprinkler is arranged over a small plate that can be rotated automatically scanning the fire flames
through the sensors. The output of the sensors is connected to a controller that controls the
operation of spraying water in the direction from which the input is received. A total of four
inbuilt reduction geared DC motors are used in the project; in which two are used for the robot
movement in all the directions i.e., forward, backward, right and left directions, one motor for
vertical motion of the ladder i.e., up and down and one motor for the sprinkler rotation for
extinguishing the fire. For more practicality, a small water tank with pumping motor is also
arranged over the chassis and the water sprinkler pipe that is firmly fixed over the plate where
the sensors are arranged can deliver water with some force. When the sensor detects the fire, the
sprinkler is positioned towards fire flames; pumping motor will be energized automatically to
extinguish the fire.
