1. Introduction Overview
1. Introduction
1.1 Overview
The NTMP01 Multifunction Processor Termination Unit is a Harmony rack communication device that is part of the
Symphony Enterprise Management and Control System. It provides serial communication ports for a Harmony rack
controller, Cnet-to-computer communication interface, and Cnet-to-Cnet communication interface. The NTMP01
termination unit has two isolated RS-232-C ports that can be configured to operate as either data communication equipment
(DCE) or data terminal equipment (DTE). It also has one non-isolated RS-485 port.
Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2 shows examples of NTMP01 termination unit applications.
2VAA001696 1-1
Hardware Description 1. Introduction
The NTMP01 termination unit is used with the Cnet-to-computer interface. The computer connects to the computer
interface through one of the NTMP01 RS-232-C ports. The computer interface handles all communication with the host
computer.
The NTMP01 termination unit is used with the Cnet-to-Cnet interface. It supports bidirectional communication between a
central Control Network (Cnet) and a satellite Cnet through the RS-232-C ports. Port zero passes system data only. Port
one passes system data or can be used as a diagnostic port. The communication modules on the central Cnet can use a
variety of means to link to a satellite Cnet such as modems, microwave, and transceivers.
The termination unit also provides two serial station links for IISAC01 station interface through an NTCS04 Control/Station
Termination Unit. Refer to the IISAC01 Analog Control Station and NTCS04 Control/Station Termination Unit instructions for
further details.
The NTMP01 termination unit has two LEDs. The LEDs identify which controller (primary or redundant) is the active
controller. This indication is useful for troubleshooting and maintenance.

2.1 Introduction
This section explains how to install the NTMP01 termination unit. The installation procedure covers handling, jumper
configuration, cable connection, and physical installation.
2VAA001696 2-1
Fuse (F1) 2. Installation
The following figure (Figure 2-1) shows the location of the fuse holder, jumpers, and connectors.
Determine if the equipment requires a DCE, DTE, non-handshake, or loopback jumper setting configuration. Figure 2-2
through Figure 2-5 shows how to set jumpers J1 and J2 for DCE, DTE, non-handshake, and loopback operation.
2-2 2VAA001696
2. Installation Jumpers J3 and J4
NOTE: The cable shield should be grounded at either end but never both ends.
2VAA001696 2-3
Jumpers J5 through J10 2. Installation
2-4 2VAA001696
2. Installation Jumpers J16 and J17
The following figure (Figure 2-7) shows the schematic for jumpers J14 and J15.
NOTE: Port P5 is inactive in this mode. Port P7 has a fixed pin arrangement and is not altered by any jumper.
This communication link is not optically isolated. Port P6 remains a RS-232-C port.
The following figure (Figure 2-8) shows the schematic for jumper J18.
2.4.10 Mounting
The termination unit is ready to install if the jumpers are properly installed and configured, and the fuse is in place.

3. Maintenance Introduction
3. Maintenance
3.1 Introduction
The reliability of any stand-alone product or control system is affected by the maintenance of the equipment. ABB
recommends that all equipment receive preventive maintenance which will keep the equipment operating at an optimum
level.
This section presents procedures that the customer should be able to perform on site. These preventive maintenance
procedures should be used as a guideline to assist in establishing good preventive maintenance practices.
Task Frequency
Check cabinet air filters. Clean or replace them as necessary. Check the air filter 3 months
more frequently in excessively dirty environments.
Check cabinet and termination unit for dust. Clean as necessary using an antistatic
vacuum.
Check all termination unit signal, power and ground connections within the cabinet.
Verify that they are secure. Refer to procedure.
Check termination unit circuit board, giving special attention to power contacts and 12 months
edge connectors. Clean as necessary. Refer to procedure.
2VAA001696 3-1
Printed Circuit Board Cleaning 3. Maintenance
Wear eye protection whenever working with cleaning solvents. When removing solvents
from printed circuit boards using compressed air, injury to the eyes could result from
splashing solvent as it is removed from the printed circuit board.
2. Remove excess solvent by using compressed air to blow it free of the circuit board.
Follow the given steps to clean tarnished or deeply stained edge connector contacts:
1. Remove tarnish or stains by using a nonabrasive eraser or equivalent.
2. Minimize electrostatic discharge by using the 80/20 isopropyl alcohol/water solution during burnishing.
NOTE: Do not use excessive force while burnishing, but use only enough force to shine the contact surface.
3. Inspect the edge connector after cleaning to assure no loss of contact surface.
4. Wipe clean with a lint-free cloth.
If input or output circuits are a shock hazard after disconnecting system power at the
power entry panel, then the door of the cabinet containing these externally powered
circuits must be marked with a warning stating that multiple power sources exist.
Check all signal wiring, power and ground connections within the cabinet to verify their integrity. When checking
connections, always turn a screw, nut or other fastening device in the direction to tighten only. If the connection is loose, it
will be tightened. If the connection is tight, the tightening action will verify that it is secure. There must not be any motion
done to loosen the connection.
3-2 2VAA001696
3. Maintenance Checking Connections
NOTES:
1.Verify that all power connections within the cabinet are secure.
2.Verify that all wiring connections to the termination unit are secure.

8. Verify that the rack modules connected to the termination unit are pulled out to disconnect them from their cable
connection on the MMU backplane.
Remove a module from its assigned MMU slot before installing or removing a cable
assigned to that slot. Failure to do so could result in damage to the module
9. Remove the termination unit cables from the P1 and P2 connectors on the termination unit.
10. Mark the cables according to their connector assignment as they are removed.
11. Remove the two mounting screws and the chassis ground screw with lock washer at E1, when all the cables are
removed from the termination unit.
12. Remove the termination unit from the field termination panel.
13. Verify that the jumper settings on the replacement termination unit are the same as the jumper settings on the
faulty termination unit.
14. Verify that the fuse is installed on the replacement termination unit.
15. Insert the tabs of the replacement termination unit into its slot on the field termination panel and as shown in
Figure 2-9 and slide the circuit board into position.
16. Secure the termination unit circuit board to the field termination panel with the two mounting screws and chassis
grounding screw (E1).
NOTE: Make sure to use the lockwasher with the grounding screw.
17. Connect the termination unit cables to their assigned connector on the termination unit.
18. Connect the RS-232-C and RS-485 cables to their assigned connectors on the termination unit.
19. Connect the serial extension cables to their assigned connectors on the termination unit.
20. Connect the +24 VDC and common wiring to the E2 and E3 Faston connectors of the termination unit.
21. Push on the faceplate of the control module to fully insert it into its module mounting unit slot.
NOTE: The module should be seated in the termination unit cable at the rear of the MMU card cage when fully
inserted.
22. Return power to the computer, modem, or terminal, after all the cables are replaced.
23. Return power to the cabinet if it is off during the replacement procedure.
