Beth Israel – The West Temple

Call of Curation

Overview

Beth Israel – The West Temple is a warm, welcoming and inclusive Reform Jewish
congregation. We are an active Jewish congregation that provides programming and
education from babies to seniors. Each week, our synagogue is filled with events ranging
from Shabbat Services to Hebrew School to adult education events to social justice
activities and more.

There is a lot of pride in our congregation’s history. Beth Israel – The West Temple is the first
Jewish congregation to have a female rabbi in Ohio. Our synagogue played a leading role in
the Soviet Jewry Movement. Today, we are proud to be the last Jewish congregation within
the Cleveland city limits.

In 1954, our synagogue opened in its current location at 14308 Triskett in the West Park
neighborhood. In 2014, we commenced multiple renovations of the building so that the
facility better responds to the needs of the congregation. This call continues that renovation
effort.

Call for Curation

Beth Israel – The West Temple is currently inviting curators to cull our collection then
rehang (and possibly reframe) various objects. This opportunity is open to all professional
curators over the age of 18 residing in Northeast Ohio. The selected curator must have the
capacity to successfully execute medium to large scale art projects.

The Project

During recent renovations on the first floor of the synagogue, all items hanging on the walls
were removed. With the renovations complete, Beth Israel – The West Temple is seeking
professional curators to review our total, internal collection of two-dimensional painting and
photos. The curator will create a logical rehanging of these items on the walls of the first
floor. We are open to having items reframed if needed. There are more items available for
hanging than wall space available. Therefore, several items will be returned to storage. The
curator should note that this is a permanent installation that may grow in the future.

The curator is responsible for installation. In addition, the curator will be responsible for
transportation of any items to be reframed offsite. Beth Israel – The West Temple will
provide minimal assistance during installation.
