COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will follow the English 1 core curriculum set by DCPS in the 2017-2018 Curriculum Guide. This guide
directs student growth and performance aligned with each of the Language Arts Standards for Florida. In
following this schedule, our goal as English/Writing instructors, is to teach, analyze, emphasize,and discuss
reading and writing skills, which will later enable students to become more motivated, confident, and
successful in literacy altogether.

COURSE TEXTS
During English 1, we will read selections from our Collections textbook, along with Homer’s The Odyssey,
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, and Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone. These texts
will be supplemented by appropriate and relevant poems, art, articles, essays to enhance student learning.

GRADING POLICY GRADING BREAKDOWN


This class follows the standard DCPS grading policy. 40% = CLASSWORK
Students are responsible for completing, turning in, 25% = TESTS/ESSAYS
and storing all assignments in their binders. Any 20% = QUIZZES/PROJECTS
teacher input errors must be verified by student’s 15% = HOMEWORK
graded copy of assignment.

REQUIRED MATERIALS MAKE-UP/LATE WORK


Each day, students should be prepared with the Missed class? Make-up work is reserved for students
following items: who have an EXCUSED ABSENCE. If you miss a day of

- Three-Hole Punched College Ruled Paper absent work bin. You will have one week to complete
- Pen (Black/Blue) or Pencil any absent work.

ACADEMIC HONESTY TUTORING


Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. This Tutoring will be offered weekly on Thursday for
