Lesson Plan Template for USM EDU Program

Name: Marianne Flanders Subject: Mathematics- Addition Two Digit Numbers

Grade: Cycle 1 Year 3 School: MAC

Standards: (FBE)

Standard 1: The student will develop basic skills and understand simple mathematical
language

Target Behaviors: (FBE)

2a. States the value of any digit in a two-digit number.

4a. Performs simple calculations by combining two sets or taking away from one set using
concrete materials.

4b. Uses the vocabulary and symbols associated with addition and subtraction

Goals: students will learn about addition

Objectives:

Students, after completing whole class exercise and discussion, will be able to complete
independent addition activities with 85% accuracy.

Prerequisite: (What the students should already know)

Should know how to add single digit numbers.

Should know place values

Should under horizontal and vertical.

Materials and Resources needed:

Handmade manipulative

Cubes

Worksheets
Handmade Addition Chart

Dry erase marker and eraser

Magnets

Instructional Considerations:

Assistance will be given as needed. Weaker students will be assisted by their peers. They will act
as mentors. I will supervise as needed.

PROCEDURE:

Anticipatory Set: I will sing the song Addition Rock. I will then encourage my students to
join me.

Model: (How will you demonstrate?) I will put some basic addition sums on the board
horizontally. As a class they will do compute them together.

Check for understanding: (How will you check their understanding?) On the addition
chart I will write the math sentence 12+ 15= on top. I will then ask my students to explain to me
how it should look if I put them on top of each other/ if I add then vertically. Students should be
able to tell me that for the number 12 the 2 goes in the ones place and 1 goes in the tens place.
For the 15, they should be able to state that the 5 goes in the ones place and 1 goes in the tens
place. If they don’t I will guide them by giving prompts and referring back to place values.

Guided Practice: (What activities will they do with your guidance?) On the addition
chart on the board I will give 2 members from each group the opportunity to work out a sum.
The class will decide if the answers are correct or not. They will give the person on the board
assistance only when needed.

Independent Practice: Each group will have a different activity to work on. This will
include them having to add as we did before and then color the picture according to the answer.
Some will have to cut and paste addition sums. Some will have to match the vertical math
sentence to the correct answer. Some students will also receive a mixture of horizontal and
vertical sums. One set of students will practice with the blocks (tens and ones) with dry erase
work boards- these students will be assisted by me directly.

Closure: we recap together what they learnt about addition. Students from each group
will share with the class the activity they did and what they learnt. Other students can also
showcase the final outcome of their activity.

Reflection: How did the lesson go? What worked? What would you do different next time?
