2017 HB’s Great Moments Y ou all need to know that the CA Legisla-
tive Year Closed on Friday. All the Rep-
resentatives went home exhausted and the
damage was done..
Our Own Air Show! So what did they accomplish during this
high pressure year in Sacramento? You won't
believe some of the new CA laws that are
going on the books January 1st – the gas tax
kicked in on Nov. 1st.
Pay particular attention to #13... the last
one.
This is an update today from Jeff Stone, Re-
publican state senator, on the progressive De-
mocrats’ continued destruction of California.
By the way, we are already deemed the worst
state for businesses. I’m hoping that Jeff got
these all right. If not, blame the Secretary of
State’s office.

Here are some of the highlights of this ses-

sion:
1) SB-1: increases your gas taxes by ap-
proximately 20 Cents (Nov 1) and your vehi-
cle license fees by an average of $100 (Jan
1st).
2) Passed Cap-n-Trade Tax which will in-
crease gas 0.63 to 0.93 cents a gallon change
and the taxes that go with it. So do the math
projection..... (0.12 + 0.63 = 0.75/gallon +
current $3.10/gallon = $3.85/gallon) We're al-
ready the costliest in the nation.
3) Proposed increase on a new tax every
residence will pay for tap water!
4) A $3.46B parks bond to pay for parks in
"disadvantaged communities", meaning Los
Angeles. The debt service alone will be over
$200 million a year. The good news is some
money goes to help fix the Salton Sea which
should have always been a State responsibil-
ity!
5) Law to release any lifer (murder, rape ,
child molestation, etc.) who is 60 years old
and has already spent 25 years in prison!
Charles Manson would have qualified if he
just waited a few months before dying; and
the Melendez brothers that murdered their
parents could be released in about 12 years?
Victims?... what victims?
6) A new $10 charge on all residents living
in a mobile home parks to address “living
condition enforcement” in those parks? What

The Last Public Execution

in America
The hanging of Rainey Bethea on August 14, 1936. It was the last public exe-
cution in the United States. The event was an item of national interest because
Bethea was to be hanged by Florence Thompson, the sheriff of Davies County.
Arthur L. Hash, a former policeman from Louisville, offered to pull the trigger
for her, and she accepted. But on the day of the execution, Hash showed up drunk
and missed his cue. A deputy did it instead, and America was disappointed.

Shop
Local
We all know how fun it is to shop locally in Huntington Beach
and our surrounding communities; but there's more to it:
1. Protect Local Character and Prosperity
Huntington Beach is unlike any other city in the world. By choosing to support locally owned
businesses, you help maintain our area's diversity and distinctive flavor, culture, theme
and lifestyle.
2. Community Well-Being
Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining
communities, linking neighbors, and by contributing more to local causes.
3. Local Decision Making
Local ownership means that important decisions are made locally by
people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of
those decisions.
4. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy
Your dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the
impact on your community as dollars spent elsewhere. When
shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city
services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and
promote community development.
5. Job and Wages
Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better
wages and benefits than chains do.
6. Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship fuels America's economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means
for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class and keep this spiral going in

communities like our's.

7. Public Benefits and Costs
Local stores in neighborhood shopping areas require comparatively little infra-
structure and make more efficient use of public services and combine with larger
shopping experiences to give our community the total look it needs to survive.
8. Environmental Sustainability
Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town
centers - which in turn are essential to reducing sprawl, automo-
bile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution. We can help build
this model if you support your local merchants.
9. Competition
A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure
innovation and low prices over the long-term. we are getting there...a little more patience,
leadership and support.
10. Product Diversity
A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on
their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product
choices...and guarantees us the consumers convenient access to what we want and need.
