HW #4.1
Use the following order of steps to get a correctly written equation. You do not
need to write the steps out separately. (1) Write the correct formulas for the
reactants. (2) Classify the type of reaction as synthesis (S), decomposition (D),
single replacement (SR), double replacement (DR), or combustion (C). (3)
Predict and write the correct formulas for the products. (4) Include the physical
state of each substance. (5) Balance the equation.
HW #4.2
Same directions as HW #4.1
1. a. Zinc metal, when heated, reacts with solid sulfur.
b. Magnesium metal, when heated, reacts with the nitrogen gas present in the air.
c. Magnesium metal, when heated, reacts with the oxygen gas present in the air.
d. Zinc metal reacts with copper (II) nitrate solution.
e. Magnesium metal reacts with hydrochloric acid and bubbles are produced.
f. Aluminum metal reacts with hydrochloric acid and bubbles are produced.
g. Silver nitrate solution is mixed with sodium chloride solution.
h. Lead metal reacts with sulfuric acid and both a precipitate and bubbles
are observed. Use lead (II).
i. Solutions of sodium sulfide and aluminum nitrate are mixed.
j. Solid calcium oxide reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide.
k. When a sodium hydroxide solution is mixed with sulfuric acid, a solution of
sodium sulfate and water is produced.
l. Nitrogen gas reacts with hydrogen gas to produce ammonia (NH 3) gas.
m. Ethanol (C2H5OH) is burned.
