Homework Questions
1. Are rest and motion absolute or relative terms?
Sol: Relative terms
2. Can displacement be greater than distance travelled by a particle?
Sol: No. Displacement  distance

3. If the displacement of a particle is zero, is the distance covered by it necessarily zero? Explain.
Sol: No. For example, when a body is thrown upwards, it returns to the starting point after sometimes.
Its displacement is zero, but not the distance travelled.
4. Distinguish between distance travelled by a particle and the displacement.
Sol:
Distance Displacement
(i) It is the actual path length It is the shortest distance between
between two points two points
(ii) It is always positive It can be positive, negative or
zero
(iii) It is a scalar It is a vector

5. An athlete completes one round of a circular track of radius 50 m in 40 s. What is the distance travelled
in 80 s?
(a) 314 m (b) 628 m (c) 200 m (d) 400 m
Sol: Distance travelled  2  2 r 

 2  2  3.14  50
 628m

Ans: (b)
6. In the problem above, what is the distance travelled by the athlete in 60s?
(a) 471 m (b) 628 m (c) 300 m (d) zero
Sol: Distance travelled  1.5 2 r 

 1.5  2  3.14  50  471m

Ans: (a)
7. To reach home, from school, Raju walks 250 m east of school, then 1 km north and then 250 m west. His
displacement is
(a) 1500 m (b) 1250 m (c) 1000 m (d) 500 m

8. The sides of a square carom board are 1m long each. The coin at the centre is pocketed by a striker
starting from one corner. The displacement of the coin is

(a) 1m (b) 2m

9. An ant in searching of food, starting from one corner of a cubic room of side 5 m, travels along three
edges to reach the opposite corner. Its displacement is

(a) 3m (b) 3 m f

(c) 5 3 m (d) 15 m

Sol: Displacement = length of the body diagonal

5 3m
i 5m
Ans: (c) 5m

10. The motion of a particle along X axis is described by the equation, x  6  4t 2  t 4 . Then
(a) at t  2s, x  6m (b) at t  2s, x is positive

(c) at t  2s, x is negative (d) x is positive from t  0 to t  2.27s

 
Sol: At t  2s, x  6  4  2   24  6 m

x is positive if 6  4t 2  t 4  0

i.e., t 2  2  10
i.e., t  0 to 2.27s
