In advance, the teacher will ask the parents of the students to send in where their families have

immigrated from in the past. The students will bring this information in and be given a label of

their countries. The students will then as a class put each of the countries onto a map using a

thumb tack to see where everyone’s families immigrated from. As a group, we will go over the

many different places that were labeled on the map and discuss ideas on why they left their

countries. Then the class will be asked a few questions and if they answer yes to them they will

raise their hand. Raise your hand if anyone else in the class’s family is from the same country as

you. Raise your hand if you and others in the class are on the same continent. Raise your hand if

your families are from more than one country. This will show students that they can share a

common place of origin and that immigration is a big part of how America came to be what it is

today.
