Racism

Do you know that racism is present everywhere around

us? Have you ever noticed it? Well, it is present
everywhere around us without us knowing it. And it is
getting more and more serious.
Nowadays, the prime minister of Malaysia has spoken
out strongly against the use of racial slurs and said that
labelling the Chinese and Indians “pendatang” .
“ Pedatang” means "foreign comer" . Well, it is wrong as
we are all citizens of the country. None of us is a
“pendatang.” None of us is an outcast. We are all full-
blooded Malaysian citizens .
We Malaysian heard too often the Chinese being
labelled “babi” yet were shocked when no action was
taken against the individual who shouted it loud and
clear in a public place. “Babi” means an insult, it means
pig. To tell the Chinese to go back to China or the
Indians to go back to India is not a silly joke but an insult.
From now on, we must try to not say racist words, well,
this words may hurt someone around you.
Segregation is also included in racism. One news that I
recently saw is that Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and
Consumerism Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainudin
reportedly said that the government is considering
creating a law to segregate trolleys for halal and non-
halal items at supermarkets. Non-halal products, he said,
can be carried in a red trolley and halal items in a trolley
of a different colour. He also said there should be
special check-out counters at supermarkets for non-
halal products. The minister claimed that paying for
non-halal items at “regular” counters has caused
problems for Muslim consumers.
The government’s proposal, which he says needed to be
studied first because it involves huge costs to
supermarket , is utterly ridiculous and will only
inconvenience shoppers, both Muslims and non-
Muslims. Well, do you think it is fair ? Well, there will be
chaos when people try to do their grocery shopping, of
course, but what’s a little inconvenience in fighting over
trolleys and queuing for hours compared to protecting
religious sensitivities?
There are also racism in school. Well, here’s proof. In
Kuala Lumpur, one of the primary school had forced the
non-muslim students to eat in the toilet during the
month of Ramadan.
Instead of eating in the toilet, why don’t the request for
the non-muslim to not eat in front the muslim students?
But in many Islamic countries, Christians, Hindus or
people of other religions are asked not to eat in public
or are not allow to eat .
If non-muslim learn to respect the muslim during the
month of Ramadan, there won’t be such lincidence .I
think that the schools should have teach the non –
Muslim not to eat in front of the muslims during the
month of Ramadan, while the school must also think
before they react, then it will be fair for all races.
We must try to learn how to overcome racism because
nowadays, racism in Malaysia is getting more and more
serious. The best way to overcome racism is not by
sweeping it under the rug. Racism is like cancer, it may
go away for a while but its always there. It spreads and
it kills. The best way to overcome racism is actually
through education. The state education should inform
the teachers to teach the students to be a good citizen
without being racist towards others . Teachers and
parents can educate students to avoid saying racist
words, doing racist action and more. They should explain
what will happen if racism continues. Last but not
least,we should learn to get along with every races.
This could change the world into a better place.
