Relevant Training/ Life Experience
As an educator I have always had an interest in who I am going to be teaching more that
what I will be teaching. Throughout my time training to be a teacher I have tried to learn more than
just the theories surrounding science and education, but to find meaningful ways to connect with the
students I could teach one day. Below is a list of courses and experiences that I think could be
relevant to a positive culture of a school.

Personal life experience:

I have spent much of my life in rural Southern Alberta having lived in Hays/ Vauxhall area
or in the Town of Taber. I believe this experience to be relevant because of the unique culture present in
these areas. I come from a Mennonite background myself with much of my family still speaking the
language and taking part in the culture and religion.

Courses:
Religious studies courses (five in total)
I decided to take religious studies courses because every student deserves the
opportunity to be shown respect and understanding. By better understanding various religions (new North
American religions, Catholicism, Mormonism, and Buddhism were a few I studied), I can better understand
and relate to the lens which a student views the world with. I can show respect for the lifestyle of
community members within and around the school.
First Nations courses (three in total)
In part with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and out of respect for students
and community members who identify as First Nations, Metis, Inuit I have elected to take courses in
relation to First Nations studies. I have taken “Foundations of Multicultural Education in Canada”, “Issues
in Native Education” and “Introduction to Spoken Cree” as well as professional development sessions and
personal readings to better understand how to connect with First Nations students and history.
