Jim & Melissa Marcum Intercessory Missions Update Jan-Feb.

2018

2017
Dear Friends & Family,
We are so excited and thankful to be in a NEW YEAR! This for us feels like a turning of a page and a new
beginning, a calm after the storms of 2017. Our prayer for each of you is that you experience this same hopeful
sense of God’s heart of love and hand of blessing upon you and your families in 2018. May the Lord’s new
mercies fall fresh upon your lives. We believe there shall be days of restoration and refreshing!
During the last six weeks of the year, we were in a season of busy-ness preparing for and then helping host
our annual “One Thing” conference. Because of the demands on us during this season, we have to take a small
break from many of the ministries we are normally involved in. So in this newsletter we will not have a lot of
ministry news to share with you. We do want to give a snapshot from One Thing – it was a great time! We’ll
also announce something special happening in March in Joplin – we hope many of you can be a part of it.
Again, thanks so much for reading and keeping up with us, we appreciate you. (P.S. – We’ll be doing bi-
monthly newsletters this year, so you’ll be hearing from us again in March!)
-Love, The Marcums

One Thing 2017 – Calling & Equipping a Generation

On December 28-31, over 17,000 believers – mostly young adults and families – came together in Kansas City once
again under the banner of “ONE THING.” We experienced four days together, sitting at the feet of our Lord Jesus,
beholding and worshiping Him, inquiring of Him and receiving from Him. IHOPKC began hosting the annual
“One Thing” conferences in 2002, basing the name of the conference on two Scriptures – one from the Old Testament
and one from the New Testament:
“One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of
the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.”
- David (Psalm 27:4)
“…but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken
away from her.” – Jesus, speaking of Mary sitting at His feet (Luke 10:42)

I (Jim) first attended One Thing in 2003, where the Lord encountered me in a powerful way during a message on the
Mercy of God, spoken by Allen Hood. I experienced deep healing in my soul and a reigniting of my passion to know
and serve the Lord and His purpose for my life. I had never successfully done an extended fast, but after that
experience with the Lord I was able to go on a 40-day fast from January 1-February 9, 2004. It was one of the most
profound seasons of change I’ve had, and it propelled our lives into a brand new season of ministry.
Of course, in 2003 when I first experienced the Lord’s blessing on this conference, I didn’t foresee that we would be
called by the Lord to come join the IHOPKC community in 2012, where we have now helped serve and host this
conference for 6 years! We have seen the transforming power of these four days visiting God’s people over and over –
it is truly amazing.
Our primary way to serve the conference for the past 5 years has been
through the Forerunner Bookstore. It is a unique way IHOPKC gives
those who come the opportunity to “bring home” what they are
receiving from the Lord at the conference. Of course we offer all the
conference sessions on CD and DVD, but we also offer one-of-a-kind
resources written (or sung) by leaders in the global prayer and worship
movement. We also have resources from all the guest speakers &
worship leaders at the conference (this year it included Francis Chan,
Michael Brown, Todd White, and Brian & Katy Torwalt). This year
at the conference we also released two new very anointed CD’s from
Forerunner Music - “Different Story” by Jon Thurlow, and “Fully Alive,” a compilation of music from IHOPKC
worship leaders. Abi Bennett, the daughter of our good friends, Kirk & Dee Bennett, is lead singer on the title cut in a
song she co-wrote called “Fingerprints.” Wow, it’s an awesome worship song! Forerunner Publishing also released a
compelling new book and CD at the conference – “Inheritance: Clinging to God’s Promises in the Midst of
Tragedy,” by IHOPKC leader, Corey Russell. After the sudden death of their 8-month-old only son, Nash, Corey and
his family faced unbearable pain and loneliness. But God carried them through the ensuing five years with promises
from five specific psalms in the Bible. The book tells about Corey’s honest journey, and the CD is a spoken-word with
music by Corey sharing from the five psalms God used to heal his heart. (Order online at: www.ihopkc.org/store.)
This was our first year as co-managers running the operations of the Bookstore. It was exhausting and a blast at the
same time! Melissa interviewed and hired 39 temporary employees who, along with our 15 staff employees, formed a
great team. We don’t just “run a bookstore” but we encourage all our workers to greet people, share encouragement
from the Lord with them, and pray with them. A lot of ministry goes on in the
Bookstore during One Thing! I (Jim) manage the back-end of things, from prep
work to store set up & operations all the way through to tear-down on Jan. 2.
Here are 3 pictures from our time in the Bookstore at One Thing.

Met Michael Brown, we’re reading his new Joy & Joshua served as cashiers at One Thing The Moral Outcry ministry booth was
book – “Saving a Sick America.” Wow! – thanks guys! in our Bookstore this year!

An IMPORTANT message coming your way!

Our IHOPKC Life Team leaders, Denny & Mindy Tebo, are
coming to Joplin to share the message of The Moral Outcry. You
may have seen things we’ve shared about this, or heard of it in a
number of other ways. But now those of you in the Joplin area
will have the opportunity to hear it for yourselves. You are
probably like us: you’ve prayed against it, voted against it, maybe
even stood against it publicly. This is a great privilege for us in
our generation to actually DO something about ending legalized
abortion in America.

Set aside the date: March 30 & 31. Denny & Mindy will be speaking at Victory Ministry & Sports
Complex at 3405 Hammons Blvd, on Friday evening and Saturday morning. We are planning on coming to
Joplin for the weekend, too. We hope to see you all there!

FINAL WORDS: We appreciate your prayers as we will be traveling this month to Orlando, FL where we will be
setting up & operating a Bookstore at our regional conference – “One-Thing Orlando.” We’re leaving Thurs, Jan. 18
and will first be helping Joy & Joshua drive their moving truck to Lexington, KY. They are moving there for Joshua
to attend Asbury Seminary. We will miss them! Then we’ll fly from Lexington to Orlando for the conference and
return to KC on Jan. 29. We’re looking forward to being back and involved in pro-life and other ministries this
coming year, including being a part of “Tent America 2018” – joining believers in all 50 states in ‘tent city’
gatherings of worship, music, prayer, and gospel proclamation at our state capitols. We hope you’ll join us in
Jefferson City on Sept. 27-29. Blessings to all of you in this New Year, and thank you all for your love & support.

Because He is worthy of it all, Jim & Melissa Marcum
