DEFINITION OF TERMS

DISCRIMINATION
Discrimination, according to the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of Davao City 0417-12, Dec.
12, 2012, is defined as “Any act, or conduct which withholds, excludes, restricts, curtails,
demeans human dignity, or otherwise impairs the recognition, enjoyment and exercise of human
rights and basic freedoms in the economic, labor, social, cultural, educational or any other field
of public life based on sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, descent, national or
ethnic origin, religious affiliation or beliefs.”
GENDER IDENTITY
Gender Identity, according to the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of Davao City 0417-12, Dec.
12, 2012, “Refers to a person having the emotional and psychological characteristics of the
opposite sex as shown by, among others, his/her behavior and sexual attraction to members of
his/her own sex, or to both sexes, whether he/she be a gay, lesbian, transsexual or bisexual.”
SEXUAL ORIENTATION
According to the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of Davao City 0417-12, Dec. 12, 2012, Sexual
Orientation “refers to the emotional or sexual attraction or inclination of a person towards
persons of his/her own sex, or both masculine and feminine sexes.”
SEX
Sex refers to the biological (reproductive) characteristics of a person.
RACE
“A group of individuals who share a common culture or history.” (Merriam-Webster, 2017)
COLOR
“Skin pigmentation especially other than white characteristic of race.” (Merriam-Webster, 2017)
NATIONAL OR ETHNIC ORIGIN
 National Origin – National Origin refers to the origin of a person based on where he/she
was born.
 Ethnic Origin – Ethnic Origin refers to the origin of a person based on what specific
type of group he/she was born in.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATIONS OR BELIEFS
 Religious Affiliations – Religious Affiliations refers to religious institutions a person is a
member of.
 Religious Beliefs – Religious Beliefs refers to a person’s belief system.
