CONTROL
SYSTEMS
At Compass Instruments, LLC we provide special services with our control systems,
going far beyond what most of our competition would ever even consider. Before
purchasing your next instrumentation system, consider the following:
1.) Unless for some reason you specify otherwise, you will get the complete system. This includes all pres-
sure transmitters, mag pick-ups, flow meters, level transmitters, temperature transmitters—plus all the ca-
bles required to connect everything up, including engine and transmission harnesses. So installation is just
a matter of mounting and plugging in the cables.
This places the system responsibility on us so that you have a 4-20 mA signal where you need a 4-20 mA
signal, and a PWM signal where you need a PWM signal. Sure, we will need a bit more information up front,
like flow rates, viscosities, tank sizes, etc., but what you get is a working system that is designed to function
per the requirements.
2.) Our engineering and design personnel have considerable experience in designing systems that just
make sense and are easy to operate. Both the placement of controls and their functions are logical. For
example, our frac controller (shown in this section) typically mounts near the center of the trailer on the road
side. Engine controls are on the left side of the screen (engine is to the left of the operator), transmission
controls are near the center of the screen (transmission is behind the controller), and the pump controls are
shown on the right side of the screen (pump is to the right of the operator).
3.) We design reliability into our products. You will note that on the frac controller, there are no terminal
blocks—no screws to come loose. Instead we use a multilayer PCB with heavy copper traces to get low re-
sistance interconnects that will stand up to the high currents required.
Another thing that makes our systems reliable is that instead of purchasing a lot of modules and trying to get
them all working together, we prefer to design much of our own system so that all the signals are compatible
and extra signal converters are not necessary.
4.) We have our own captive sheet metal fabrication shop so we are not locked into packaging that requires
one enclosure for power, another for controls, another for wireless, etc. If multiple enclosures are used, it is
for actual design reasons, not of necessity because of available enclosure sizes.
5.) Our design team is very contentious when it comes to quality and reliability. We strive to use the best
possible components and materials. Yet, when it comes to cost, while we may not be the lowest price sys-
tem available, we are certainly not the most expensive—and when the long term cost of maintenance and
repairs are included, we may just have the most inexpensive systems on the market.

FC3200 SERIES FRAC CONTROLLER
Our FC3200 Frac Controller installed on a unit with CAT engine and CAT transmission. We have sev-
eral fleets of these that have been fully operational in the field for over two years. We have also in-
stalled them on Frac units with MTU engines and Allison transmissions—they can in fact be adapted
to just about any engine transmission pair.
The unit is shock mounted on the bottom and back, internally the sub-panel is shock mounted to the
enclosure, and additional shock mounts are installed on the PCB mounting.
The discharge pressure transmitter provides a 4-20 mA real-time signal for fast over-pressure shut-
down. All other pressure and temperature transmitters are CAN bus to reduce the quantity of cables
required. Connectors are mounted on the bottom except the engine and transmission harness plug
into the far side.
The FC3200 contains all the typical engine and transmission controls as well as controls for the lube
pump and work lights. Suction (supercharge) pressure is also monitored to verify sufficient pressure
to prevent cavitation. As a bonus, this unit even logs the data to give compete feedback of each job.
4
As you can see, the FC3200 touch screen display is very bright and has very low reflection
making it very easy to read in both direct sunlight and dark conditions.
We also have the capability to connect the Ethernet from multiple units to a larger touch
screen controller with the capability of monitoring and controlling multiple units from one
controller.
Factors can be changed to provide correct readings if fluid ends are changed out to a differ-
ent size. Of course over pressure shutdown is programmable.
The unit can be customized to customer requirements and could also be utilized for a num-
ber of other applications. For example the engine and transmission could be automatically
controlled to produce a specific flow rate, or a desired discharge pressure, or even an en-
gine RPM/torque/load combination that provides the best economy.
One of our customers had purchased great quantities of a competitors unit that, due to
overheating and multiple modules, they could not keep operational. They requested for us
to build our unit the same size as the main enclosure our competition was using. That is
the unit shown in the picture. However, the enclosure could be larger or smaller, the dis-
play could be larger or smaller, features could be added or taken off, since we have our
own engineering group and a captive sheet metal fabrication group, all those changes
could be accomplished quickly and inexpensively.
5
This is the 32 bit con-
trol unit used in the
FC3200 Frac Control-
ler. This robust con-
troller just keeps on
working day after day.
The internal multilayer PCB provides all the necessary interconnects without
terminal blocks. Extra thick copper traces are designed to carry the high cur-
rents required. Fuses protect external circuits and LEDs show fuse status.
Connectors for the engine harness and transmission harness are PCB mount
and protrude through the side of the enclosure for easy connections. Locking
connectors are used for wiring to other external connectors. Solid state re-
lays are used for ignition, start, ekill, and three sets of work lights.
6
The FC3200 Frac Controller also data logs job parameters so that at the end of each job a com-
plete history file is available.
The data logging sample rate is selectable from 1 to 10 samples per second and the following
parameters are logged:
Start Date and Time
Pump Number
Engine Coolant Pressure
Engine Fuel Pressure
Engine Load
Engine Torque
Engine RPM
Engine Oil Pressure
Engine Alternator Voltage
Engine Hours
Engine Hydraulic Horse Power
Engine Oil Temperature
Check Engine Status
Transmission Gear
Transmission Oil Pressure
Transmission Torque Converter Pressure
Transmission Oil Temperature
Check Transmission Status
Over Pressure Alarm Status
Total Barrels Pumped
Pump Rate in BPM
Pump Over Pressure Set point
Pump Oil Pressure
Pump Discharge Pressure
Pump Suction Pressure
Pump Oil Temperature
Data may be saved to a USB drive and imported into an Exel spread sheet.
7
Supplied with each FC3200 are the following external devices:
Suction (supercharge) pressure transmitter, CAN bus
Lube Oil Pressure/Temperature transmitter, CAN bus
Torque Converter Pressure/Temperature Transmitter, CAN bus
Transmission Fluid Pressure/Temperature, CAN bus
Sensor CAN bus cable to connect the above to the controller.
Discharge pressure transmitter, 0-15,000 PSI, 4-20 mA
Discharge pressure cable
Lube Oil cable to wire into the greaser for pump lubrication
Starter cable to wire to the engine starter solenoid.
Power cable to bring main power to this enclosure
SUGGESTED OPTIONS:
Discharge pressure dampener cable instead of standard discharge cable. This adds $650.00 to
the cost but provides a very stable discharge pressure reading for both display and data logging.
Also helps to prevent premature overpressure shutdown.

DATA LOGGER
The Data Logger is used to record important parameters in a process. The unit shown in the picture above
was initially used on a dual cement pumper to log cement jobs as the casing was cemented into the well.
Critical parameters are discharge pressures, rates, and density.
In this application, a separate enclosure was used to bring data to a controller. The controller then sent the
collected data to the panel PC via an Ethernet cable. The touchscreen panel PC mounted in the operators
control panel.
The touchscreen Panel PC allows data logging to start, pause, resume, and end. Also each job can be as-
signed a name and location. Scaling is done with ranges which may be input via the panel PC. While active,
the data is plotted on the display in graph form and saved to a solid state hard drive. A panel mount USB
connector allows data to be exported to a USB drive where it can be loaded on the customers computer
where the same data and graphs may be displayed.
All sensors may be provided if needed. Over molded cables may also be provided to connect the data collec-
tion box to the external sensors.
9
The Data Logger may also be installed in a Pelican case to provide a portable data collection in-
strument. The unit shown below is designed to operate from 12VDC. An internal 12V to 24V DC/
DC converter provides the 24VDC for external sensors. This particular unit was used with a dual
pumper that was pumping frac jobs and was measuring the rates and pressures from each pump
and the density based on amount of sand added. However, a meter with a density output could
also be used to get true density.
Operations and functions are very similar to the panel mounted unit. Again, Compass Instru-
ments could supply all the external sensors and over molded cables if needed.

CHEMICAL ADDITIVE SYSTEM
The Compass Instruments Chemical Additive System is a complete system that is designed to
control both the additives and the control valves associated with the chemicals. This allows the
Chemical Additive System the capability to fill the additive tanks, recirculate the fluid in the tanks,
and actively controlling the chemicals during a process application. Liquid and/or dry chemicals
may be controlled at a programed rate or to a ratio to the base flow rate.
Because this unit offers total control, parameters and plumbing may change from system to sys-
tem which we can accommodate with minor software changes.
For new applications we’d like to offer total system responsibility, providing all flowmeters, tank lev-
el transmitters, over molded cables, operator panels, weatherproof enclosures, and even valves
and pumps if needed. For retrofit applications we can provide only those items needed to com-
plete the system.
The main operator interface unit may be mounted in a console, control cabin, or even on the side
of the truck or skid. It communicates with I/O Modules which may be mounted closer to the actual
devices being controlled. Both the main operator interface unit and the I/O modules are weather-
proof and do not require a controlled environment. However, depending on the application, signal
converters and power distribution circuitry may need protection.
Also, a panel PC with compatible software is available so that the entire operation may be remote-
ly controlled from a control room or data van.
Additionally, a remote panel PC with data logging software is available so that the data from the
chemical additives along with other job data may be saved real time for proof of quality and billing
applications.

ACID
BLENDING/BATCHING
SYSTEM
The Compass Instruments Acid Blending/Batching System is a complete system that is designed
to control both the acid, the water, and the control valves associated with loading, blending, batch-
ing, and discharge. This allows the Acid Blending/Batching System the capability to fill the two
separate batch tanks with water and/or acid, recirculate the fluid in the tanks, monitor the tank lev-
els, control the tank agitators, control the discharge pumps and monitor the discharge pressure
and density. A base rate output is available so that liquid or dry chemicals may be real time ratio
controlled.
Because this unit offers total control, we realize that parameters and plumbing may change from
system to system. We are prepared to accommodate this with minor software changes.
For new applications we’d like to offer total system responsibility, providing all flowmeters, density
meters, pressure transmitters, over molded cables, operator panels, weatherproof enclosures, and
even valves and pumps if needed. For retrofit applications we can provide only those items need-
ed to complete the system.

Flow meters, pressure transmitters, level transmitters, viscometers, and various other kinds of
electronic instrumentation comes with NPT conduit connections and internal terminal blocks for
wiring. Installing connectors on these instruments makes them more portable and makes repairs
for damaged cables considerably faster and safer. No searching for manuals or diagrams to deter-
mine the pin-out and no equipment damaged because it was wired wrong. Just plug in a new ca-
ble and it is quickly back in operation.
Compass Instruments, LLC provides standard connector adapters for 1/2” NPT fittings for a num-
ber of different connectors. Below is a table listing many, more are being added as required:

DC/DC
CONVERTERS
DC/DC Converters are used to convert available power to the voltage required by the instru-
mentation being powered. Most vehicle alternators output power to charge either 12VDC bat-
teries or 24VDC batteries.
Instrumentation that would be mounted on vehicles, such as flow meters, valves, solenoids, vis-
cometers, densitometers, controllers, displays, etc. are typically designed to operate from either
12VDC or 24VDC.
Therefore it is often necessary to convert 12VDC vehicle power to 24VDC for instrumentation,
or the opposite for 24VDC vehicle power.
Unfortunately, most DC/DC converters are not suited to this application because they either do
not output enough current, they are not reliable in this environment, or they are not packaged for
this type use.
The DC/DC converters designed and built by Compass Instruments output up to 240 watts mak-
ing them quiet sufficient for almost any amount of instrumentation mounted on a vehicle. The
12 to 24VDC unit outputs up to 10 amps, the 24 to 12VDC unit outputs up to 20 amps.
Reliability is largely dependent on the design and our converters are designed for the extreme.
Factors that affect reliability include the following:
HEAT Our units utilize a multiphase design, meaning that the current has multiple paths
through the converter so all the heat is not generated in one spot. MOSFET transistors used
are state-or-the –art with very low on resistance, so efficiency is very high and not much heat
is generated. Finally, the PCB material used is thermally conductive, so any heat generated
is conducted into the aluminum case and baseplate.
VIBRATION We use surface mount components with low mass so shock and vibration is not
an issue. Additionally, we pot the inside of the housing so that things actually cannot move.
WATER INTRUSION Our units are installed in NEMA 4X housings and then filled with a
potting material so that moisture cannot affect the units.
OVER VOLTAGE INPUT Input over voltage protection keeps an input spike from causing
damage to the circuitry.
SHORT CIRCUIT OUTPUT Current limit and current fold-back circuitry keep the output from
being damaged by an output short circuit or overload.

DIN RAIL MOUNT
MODULES
Compass Instruments, LLC has designed and now manufactures several instruments that mount
on DIN rail. This is a convenient and practical way to house various smaller electronic modules.
They are different by design, some by function, all by the robust circuitry. The following is a partial
list of those available. Most are usually in stock at our factory.
Frequency Splitter: This module receives one frequency and transmits two isolated signals of the
same frequency. Output signals can be independently powered and can be at different voltages.
This unit is ideal for receiving a signal from a transducer and supplying that signal to two different
instruments. No worry about different grounds or different voltage requirements. Each output will
sink up to 2 amps at up to 30 VDC.
Dual PWM Transmitter: This unit contains two independent sections that are each driven by a
0 to 5VDC signal, or from a 10K potentiometer. The output is a 488 Hz PWM signal that will sink
up to 10 Amps at up to 40VDC.
4-20 mA Filter: This unit receives a 4-20 mA signal, filters out any noise or variations in the real
signal, then outputs a clean 4-20 mA signal representative of the average input current. Although
signal delay from input to output is only approximately 20 milliseconds, the results are amazing.
Analog Transmitter: This unit is available in various versions. Generally 0-5VDC control signal
or a 10K pot will control the output. The output can be 4-20 mA, 0-5VDC, 0-10VDC, or 6-10VDC.
Dual Voltage Transmitter: Each section of this unit is controlled by a 10K pot and may be or-
dered in various output ranges. Typical outputs range from 0.5 to 2.0 volts on the low end to 4.5 to
10 volts on the high end. (0.5 to 4.5V, 1.0 to 5.0V, 1.0 to 10.0V, 2.0 to 10.0V, etc.) Each output is
completely independent of the other and may be scaled differently. Ranges must be specified
when ordered.
Solid State Relay: This unit can be ordered as a dual, with each section operating independently
and each can switch up to 50 volts at up to 10 amps. If ordered as a single it can switch up to 50
volts at up to 20 amps. The input configuration must also be specified for each output to be on
with a low level input or a high level input.

on the signal.
In either case, this unit will convert
a noisy signal to a clean signal.
If you have a load cell on equipment with moving parts, the vibration sometimes causes the load cell to have an er-
ratic output. This unit can also be used to give a stable output in those applications.
The output signal closely tracks the input signal, and while linearity is near perfect, total gain is not as exact. If your
equipment can calibrate out small errors in gain this can easily be overcome. Otherwise, consider our “Cable Damp-
ener” which accomplishes the same functions and is over-molded in a cable. The “Cable Dampener” is designed to be
used with 1502 style, high pressure, pressure transmitters with shunt call. They have a calibrate function which math-
ematically checks the input and regardless of zero and full scale drifts, programs the output to be exactly 4-20
milliamps. Check out more information on the “Cable Dampener” in the “Active Cables” section of this catalog.

PRESSURE
INSTRUMENTATION
Many of our customers are involved in pumping product at high pressures, and this always has it’s
challenges. We at Compass Instruments have produced some unique products to make this job
both easier and safer.
The MODEL DI200 Pressure Dampener was designed to both isolate and smooth the 4-20 mA sig-
nal from the high pressure discharge pressure transmitter. This prevents ground loops and pro-
vides a smooth signal, yet only delays changes in the signal corresponding to real average pres-
sure changes by 20 milliseconds. Data logging, displaying actual discharge pressure, plotting a
chart or even just watching a discharge pressure gage will never bee the same.
The MODEL DC300 preforms the same pressure dampening function outlined above, plus the cali-
bration function is done internally so that when a calibrate function is done, the output is rescaled to
4.0 mA to 20.0 mA—not just something close. This model is also going to be available over molded
in a cable. We are currently working on a patent on these so they are not available at the mo-
ment—but should be available on or before 3rd quarter 2015.
The Compass Instruments pressure transmitter tester has both voltmeter and current meter dis-
plays and connects directly to a pressure transmitter via a pressure cable. Two buttons allow the
current to be measured at both the minimum range and maximum range positions 4 mA and 20
mA. So it’s quick to tell if a pressure transmitter is functional and if the output calibration is within
reason.
Because we sell a lot of 1502 type hammer union pressures with our systems, we usually have a
number of them is stock. So for those applications where a need arises quickly, we can often help
with units from stock.
28
PRESSURE DAMPENER
MODEL DI200
Positive displacement pumps typically cause discharge pressure pulsations, especially when pumping liq-
uids that are non-compressible and even more so at higher pressures. Well stimulation pumps, mud
pumps, and pumps used to cement well casings are all examples of applications that have historically been
plagued with pulsating pressure. Yet, it is of utmost importance to know the discharge pressure so that the
over-pressure shutdown system can operate effective and quickly in the event of a sudden rise in pressure.
1502 Hammer Union pressure transmitters made by Viatran, GP-50, or a number of other companies are
typically used to measure the pressure. Usually there is some attempt to use software averaging to stabi-
lize the displayed value. But in order for the system to be responsive to an over pressure condition, up until
now, not much could be done.
The compass Instruments Pressure Dampener is connected to the 1502 type pressure transmitter and the
output is a smooth and clean 4-20 milliamp signal that is delayed only approximately 20 milliseconds. Addi-
tionally, the pressure transmitter is electrically isolated so chassis grounds and signal grounds at different
levels are no longer a problem. The unit actually has two isolated outputs, one with a smooth, clean, 4-20
mA signal that has about 20 millisecond delay, the other that has a 4-20 mA signal with little to no delay but
the same pressure pulsations as are on the input.
Most all standard 1502 Hammer Union pressure transmitters have a built in shunt calibrate function con-
nected to connector pins “E” and “F”. This calibrate function is also electrically isolated and still function as
always So the operator can continue to calibrate his equipment right through this device as though it was
not there.

PRESSURE DAMPENER
MODEL DC200
The DC200 pressure dampener is much like the DI200 except it does not have electrical isolation,
it has only one output—the filtered one, and it does automatic rescaling. The automatic rescaling is
an internal feature that functions when the pressure transmitter shunt calibrate function is imple-
mented. This rescaling feature changes the output calibration so that 0 PSI will output 4.0
milliamps and full scale (Typically 15K PSI) will output 20.0 milliamps. This feature eliminates the
receiving instrumentation from having to be continuously recalibrated.
With this rescaling feature in place, if a pressure transmitter is changed out, just do the shunt cali-
bration, and all the rescaling is accomplished internal to the DC200.
Of course it still provides the dampened (filtered) output so that data is stable for viewing and log-
ging, premature over pressure shutdowns are no longer a problem, and the signal delay through
the unit is approximately the same so fast over pressure shutdown still occurs when a problem re-
ally does exist.
We are currently working on patents for this unit so it is not available immediately. We anticipate
beginning deliveries in May, 2015.
PRESSURE TRANSMITTER
TESTER
Plug the pressure cable into the unit; plug the 24V adapter into the unit.
Press the red button and 24VDC is applied to the pressure transmitter
and with no pressure it should output 4 mA. Note the 3.88 mA reading
on the test unit.
Press both the red and green buttons and the pressure transmitter out-
put should switch to 20 mA. The current meter would then display the
full scale reading (approximately 20 mA).

PICK-UP
OUTPUT PULSE
UP TP 0.150” SPACING.
Don’t be fooled by the small size, this is a real proximity pick-up that works with most any gear, or
even a bolt on a shaft. Output is one pulse per passing gear tooth. Installation adjustment is
simplified with the internal LED that is on when object is in range—it does not have to be moving.
If the gear is rotating and the unit is installed correctly, the LED will blink with each passing gear
tooth. This unit will sense down to zero speed and does not have a low speed cutoff.
Cable can be extended and can be supplied with a connector and an over molded cable.

SPECIALTY
SIGNAL SIMULATOR/CALIBRATOR
This is an extremely versatile piece of test equipment that can both measure and output signals
that are industry standards such as current, voltage, PWM, frequency, and even quadrature.
One big difference between this unit and others available is that this can be supplied with indus-
try standard connectors. The calibration accuracy is traceable and the unit can be returned year-
ly for recalibration.
ENGINE MONITOR/CONTROLLER
This ruggedized unit displays engine information available from the J1939 CAN bus. One ver-
sion also allows J1939 throttle control. Special features are available such as controlling for
maximum power, or for maximum fuel economy. Features not normally available can easily be
added, such as fuel level, air filter status, etc.
