Introduction into Political Theory

This lecture provides an introduction into theories and arguments of the classics of modern
political theory. We will identify the key concepts such as freedom, equality, power,
sovereignty, law, rights, property, legitimacy, the state, democracy, civil society, capitalism,
and ideology. The authors we are going to discuss include eight classics of modern political
theory: Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Mill, Marx, Weber, Schmitt, Arendt, Foucault, and
Habermas. The aim of the class is to familiarize students with the major contributions of these
thinkers to the history of political thought. The emphasis will be given to the relevance of
their theories and concepts for understanding contemporary discourses in social sciences as
well as current affairs and politics.
