SURAH HUMAZA

NAME: MOAZZAM HAMEED PARACHA

ROLL#: FA16-BCS-021

SUBMISSION DATE: 10-10-2016

CLASS: 1-A
Overview
In the phrase "slandering traducer" (Arabic: humazah lumazah), according to Ibn kathir, the first
word refers to slander by speech, and the second to slander by action (though he also
quotes Mujahid as saying the opposite: "Al-Humazah is with the hand and the eye, and Al-
Lumazah is with the tongue." The "fire ... which leapeth over the hearts" is sometimes
interpreted as starting below and rising: according to Ibn Kathir, Muhammad bin Ka`b said that "it
(the Fire) will devour every part of his body until it reaches his heart and comes to the level of
his throat, then it will return to his body." The "columns" described in the final verse are
interpreted as columns of fire by some authorities, as in the translation above, but as literal pillars of
iron by some others.
Surah Humazah tells how bad mankind can get into loss, and this is why some scholars state that
there is no severer description given of hell in the Quran than the description given in this surah.
Many severe and harsh descriptions of Hell are mentioned in this surah, especially when Allah says
about hell what He has not said in other Surahs: “Naarullah” ((the) Fire (of) Allah!).
In other Surahs, Allah says “Naaru Jahanam” (Fire of Hell) etc. But when the fire is attributed to
GOD, it’s more than that, it’s a fire lit by Allah Himself for those who opposed Him.
This is the last Surah in the Quran which discusses the Akhirah, and the Surahs after this do not
discuss the Akhirah again.

SURHA + TRANSLATION
BRIEF TAFSEER OF SURAH HUMAZA
There are two other Surahs in the Quran which are linked with surah humaza. The first
being surah takathur and the second being surah Al-Asr, with surah Al-Asr being
located just prior to surah humaza in the Glorious Quran.

Surah takathur tells us about the complaint Allah has with human beings distracted and
remain distracted till finally their end arrives and they have wasted all the time they have
been given. Surah Al-Asr tell us that humanity is at loss (except for those who accepted
faith, and did good deeds and urged one another to truth and patients), while surah
humazah tells how that lose happens us just how bad that lose is as it is not only the
last surah to talk about the hereafter in the Quran but also gives us the most sever
description of the hell fire.

Surah Humaza warns of the severe punishment in the three grave sins which are
backbiting, slandering and the hording of wealth. The surah beings with the word wail
which means destruction, curse, woe, etc. and has been used 27 times in the Quran.
Now the surah begins without the Al which implies that it can be, either a fact or a
prayer or curse, so when the surah begins by saying destruction to every backbiter and
slanderer, it can be taken as both a fact and also as a curse of Allah as may destruction
be upon them.
Most commenters agree that the word humz, from which is derived the word humazah,
means to ‘backbite’. The word lumz, from which is derived the word lumazah, means to
‘slander’. Both these sins are morally and socially deadly and the Quran and Sunnah
have sounded a grave warning against them.

According to the Hadith of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H): -

“The worst servants of Allah are those who speak ill of someone, creating enmity
between friends and finding fault with innocent people”

The third evil quality denounced severely in this Surah is greed, that is, the selfish
hoarding of wealth, against which is a stern warning of the dreadful end of those who
have passion for world riches. This verse however, refers to the love of, and passion for,
wealth which is accumulated ad counted over and over again. An example of the
punishment for the hoarding of wealth can be found in Surah Baqarah, which speaks of
a man(Qaroon) during the time of Hazrat Musa (P.B.U.H), who had accumulated so
much wealth that the keys to his treasure required a hundred camels to be carried. For
his sin he along with his wealth were swallowed up by the earth, implying just how
serious a sin the hoarding of wealth without paying its proper dues can truly be.
This verse does not imply that anyone who has wealth is a sinner but that those who
become greedy and proud and arrogant of their wealth are in fact being talked about in
this Surah.
This Surah is the last Surah to talk about the hereafter and thus in its climax, according
to many scholars depicts the most sever description of Jahannam. Naar means fire and
is attributed to Jahannam but in this Surah the word Naarullah is used, attributing the
fire with Allah, and is thus said as the fire lit by Allah. This gives us quite a terrifying
view about the fire of Jahannam as Allah Himself has gone out of His way in implying
He has lit it, warning us just how terrifying the fire of hell shall be.
Verse (104-7) (that will peep into the hearts). In other words, the fire of Hell will reach
into their hearts. The basic property of fire is to burn. When people are put into the
Hell0fire, it will devour every part of their body, but the person won’t die. This
characteristic of the fire is especially highlighted in this verse the fires of this world kill us
before it reaches the heart. The fire of Jahannam on the other hand, will reach the heart
in the state of life, and the person will experience the torture of the burning of the heart
while alive
