En calculo el área consiste en determinar el área bajo la curva de una función f(x) en un
intervalo cerrado [a,b].
Formula general
Dada una función y=f(x) integrable en un intervalo [a,b], el área de la región limitada por la
función, el eje OX y las rectas x=a y x=b se define como

APLICACIÓN DE LA INTEGRAL DEFINIDA AL CÁLCULO DE
ÁREAS DE FIGURAS PLANAS
Para determinar el área bajo la función [f(x)] distinguimos el signo de [f(x)] entoces:
Si f(x) > 0 x ϵ [a,b], entonces la integral definida es positiva, es decir la gráfica de la función
está por encima del eje de abscisas.

La función toma valores positivos y negativos En ese caso el recinto tiene zonas por encima y
por debajo del eje de abscisas.
Para determinar el área de un recinto limitado por una función f(x) y el eje OX entre los puntos
a y b necesitamos saber si la función cambia de signo, hallando los cortes con el eje OX.
Después, se hallan las integrales definidas por separado en cada intervalo tomando sus valores
en valor absoluto. El área pedida será la suma de todas las áreas de cada uno de los recintos.
