QUESTION 1

(a) Define the term “per Unit” system and discuss its advantages in
calculation.
[5 Marks]

(b) The one line diagram of a three phase, two bus, power system is
shown in figure Q.1. The manufacturer’s data for each component
is given as:

G: 100 MVA, 22 KV, X =0.8712 Ω

T1: 50 MVA, 22/275 KV, X = 0.1 p.u.
T2: 40 MVA, 275/11 KV, X= 0.06 p.u.
Static load: 75 MVA, 0.05 lagging power factor (Cos Φ = 0.05)
The line connecting bus 1 and bus 2 has reactance of 50 Ohms.

Draw the per unit impedance diagram of the network on the base of
100 MVA.

QUESTION 2

(a)

With the aid of circuit diagrams discuss how the negative sequence
reactance of synchronous machines is measured.

[5 Marks]
(b)

A 100 MVA, 33 KV, 50 Hz generator is connected to a load through two

transformers and a transmission line. Details of each component is given
as:

G: 100 MVA, 33 KV, Y (grounded), X1 = X2 = 0.15 pu, Xo = 0.05 pu

T1: 100 MVA, 33/275 KV, Y-Y (both grounded), X1 = X2 = Xo = 0.08 pu
TL: 100 Km, X1 = X2 = 7.562 Ω/Km, Xo = 15.124 Ω/Km
T2: 50 MVA, 275/11 KV, ∆-Y (Y- grounded), X1 = X2 = Xo = 0.08 pu
Load: 45 MW, 0.9 power factor lagging, 11 KV, Y (grounded), X1 = X2 =
0.15 pu, Xo = 0.05 pu

(i) Draw the single line diagram of the network in details.

[3 Marks]

(ii) Draw the per phase, per unit sequence reactance diagrams of
the network on the base of 100 MVA.
[7 Marks]

(iii) If a line to ground fault occurs at the secondary terminal of T2,

calculate the fault current in KA.

QUESTION 3

Figure Q.3 shows an ac generator connected to an infinite bus through a

double circuit having transformers at both sending end and receiving
ends. The generator supplies 25 MW (instantaneous power) at constant
excitation.

For 40 MW as the maximum power capability of the generator

(i) Graphically show the Power Load angle curve to scale.

[10Marks]

(ii) From the concept of equal area criterion, determine the critical angle
for the condition when a sudden increase in the generator output will not
cause the loss of stability.
[15 Marks]

QUESTION 4

(a) Discuss the importance of power flow in power systems.

[ 5 Marks]
(b) Figure Q.4 shows the single line diagram of a three bus system.
Data for this system are given in Tables I and II.
(i) Using the Gauss-Seidel method, determine the phasor
values of the voltage at bus 2 after one round of iteration.
