GENDER INEQUALITY AND FEMINISM

We have recently celebrated the International Women’s Day (on March

8th), and it seems that it is today a topic as actual as it was 150 years

ago. Gender equality is now a burning issue, with lots of new claimings

such as: equal wages, the ceiling-glass breaking, or ending with daily

male chauvinism.

A new study revealed one example of male chauvinism, and how it’s

integrated in our society, and therefore, in our minds, since childhood. It

was based on a video where both kids and grown-ups were asked to do

actions “like a girl”. While grown-ups were making these actions as a

joke, making a fool of it, for example, running in a funny way or throwing

a ball with no force, as if they were saying: “girls are incapable of doing

this kind of things right”. Children (female children) weren’t. For them,

running, or fighting like a girl is not different from doing it like a boy, just

because for them, there’s no such a thing as gender gap, or gender

inequality.
Hereby one question emerges: When do our minds create this illusion of

difference? Or maybe, the children are just knaïve and we, men and

women, are indeed different, as many people, like Donald Trump

assure?

Maybe we are different genetically speaking, but that doesn’t mean that

we can (and ought to) be different in rights, both legally and effectively.

In fact, that only means that we have to fight together to help,

complement, and care of each others, like equals and partners.

1. True or false:

- “The possibility for women to get managing jobs is not a claim of

feminism, as it is not a problem”

- “In the study, both kids and grown-ups thought a girl can do the

same things in the same way as a man”.

2. Answer these questions according to the information in the

text

- Was the children’s attitude the same as the adults’? Why?

- Does everybody have the same opinion about gender equality?

What could be, according to the text, one of these people’s

reasoning?

3. Find synonyms for these words in the text:

- Salaries

- Innocent

- Adults

- To affirm

4. Rephrasing
