2. Please agree with your peers your presentation group for CW1. Your group should consist
of 4 members; in exceptional circumstances we might also accept groups of 3 or groups of 5
students. Let your tutor know of the names, Id number and University email addresses
of the members of your group.
Have the first meeting with your group, to discuss the coursework specification; you might be
able to chose a topic today, or at least agree by when the topic will be confirmed. Keep brief
notes of this meeting (date/time; students’ present; agreed actions; day, time and location of
next meeting).
3. Self-managed activity: Consider the PowerPoint presentation on academic notes that you
can find on BlackBoard, under ‘Tutorials’.
Then consider your own lecture notes, from a single lecture, from a module you are
currently attending (notes from any module you are currently attending are suitable, based
on a single week’s lecture).
In addition, have at hand any handouts/slides your lecturer has provided you for the
particular lecture your notes are based on, as well as any additional material (e.g. a book)
your lecturer might have advised you to read, to support the particular lecture’s content.
a. Do you consistently ensure that you are taking your own notes for each one of the
modules/lectures you are attending this semester?
b. Do you use a dedicated exercise book/folder for each module’s lecture notes?
c. Are your lecture notes hand-written?
d. Consider the particular set of your own lecture notes you brought with you today:
d(i): Are the module code; module name; module leader’s name; lecture number; date
notes where taken; your name, clearly marked? If not, add any missing information now.
d(ii): Which method of note taking are you following (e.g. verbatim, linear, webbed)? Are
you consistent in the method you are applying? If unsure, answer this question following
the lecture on taking notes.
d(iii): Have you used any abbreviations to help you while taking notes? Have you clearly
marked concepts/definitions/examples that illustrate concepts/the relationship among
concepts, introduced in the particular lecture? If not, revise your lecture notes now.
d(iv): Have you left gaps for revising your notes at a later opportunity?
e. Compare your notes with your lecturer’s slides/handouts for the particular lecture: are
your own notes written in your own words? If not, revise them now.
4
f. Are there any points in your notes that you are unsure about? Have you sought
clarification from your lecturer during the lecture? If yes, have you included their
answer in your notes? You could add your lecturer’s answer now.
g. If you are still unsure about a particular point, ask the module tutor at your tutorial
session and/or the module leader at the next opportunity (lecture) and add their
response to your notes.
h. Have you revisited/revised your notes after the lecture? If not, do so now.
i. Have you considered any additional material (e.g. the ‘Essential Reading’ list stated at
the module’s syllabus/pro-forma, or a particular chapter from a book etc.) your
lecturer might have advised you to consult, in order to support material taught in a
particular lecture? Have your revised your notes accordingly? If not, you can do this
now.
j. Follow this guidance for notes you are taking from all your lectures/tutorials.
