II. Lagrange Multipliers


1. Find the maximum and minimum values of f (x, y) = 5x + 3y subject to the constraint x2 − y 2 = 136.
2. A circular metal wire with equation x2 + y 2 = 1 is heated so that the temperature at any point (x, y) on the
wire is T (x, y) = x2 − y 2 . Determine the hottest and coldest points on the wire.

constraint x + y 2 + z 2 = 9.
2. Given f (x, y) = xexy + y.

(a) Find the rate of change of f at P (2, 0) in the direction of θ = 3 .
(b) In what direction does f have a minimum rate of change? Give the maximum value for Du f (2, 0).
3. Consider the function f (x, y) = xey − yex .
(a) At the point (−1, −1), give a vector in whose direction f increases the fastest.

IV. Relative Maxima and the Second Derivative Test
1. Find the relative extreme values and saddle points, if there are any, of the function g(x, y) = xy 2 − 6x2 − 3y 2 .

2. Find and classify all the critical points for f (x, y) = 4 + x3 + y 3 − 3xy.

3. Use the second derivative test to identify all local extrema and saddle points of f (x, y) = x4 − 2x3 + y 2 − 2.

4. Examine the function f (x, y) = 3x2 − 3y 2 − 4x + 2y − 8 for relative extrema and saddle points.
V. Applications of Double Integrals
1. Let R be the triangular region in the xy-plane with vertices at (0, 0), (0, 1), and (1, 1).

(a) Set-up an iterated double integral equal to


i. the volume of the solid whose base is R and whose height at any (x, y) ∈ R is x2 + 2xy + y 2 .
ii. the moment of mass about the x-axis of the lamina in the shape of R, with area density ρ(x, y) =
x + y at any (x, y) ∈ R.
(b) Set-up an iterated double integral equal to the area of the portion of the surface z = x2 + y 2 that lies
directly above R.
