Where to start: Think "What variable can I easily eliminate by


addition or subtraction?" y
then "Should I be adding or subtracting? adding (because +y and ­y have
opposite signs)

What to do:
Step 2: Substitute "x" into 1 of the original 
Step 1: Add the equations  equations and solve for "y"
and simplify
2x ­ y = 1

2(­1/3) ­ y = 1

Step 3: Check your work by plugging in (x,y) into either original
