1st Prong - Due Monday, October 23, 2017 (by end of class)
1st prong - Establish the context of the problem (What is the history of the problem?)
1. First Context Source
a. URL/Link (or, book title and author) -
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/dont-cut-planned-parenthoods-funds-
increase-them/2015/07/31/fe66aad8-379e-11e5-b673-
1df005a0fb28_story.html?utm_term=.20acbaac885f
b. Summary - The author was trying to make her opinion clear about how she does
not think the government should defund Planned Parenthood. Not only are they
removing access to abortion services, but contraception, STI testing, medication,
etc. She believes the government should not have the decision whether you are
ready to build a family or not. They are risking more teen pregnancies, facilitating
sexually transmitted diseases, and producing uneducated sex.
b. Summary - It is saying that the GOP bill defunded Planned Parenthood for an
entire year because the money is not just going to birth control, and STD testing,
but abortion services and republicans do not support abortions. Pretty much they
blocked Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood so they were very close
to removing the clinics completely. People believe that it is not okay, because
many women rely on Planned Parenthood for health care.
b. Summary - The author who wrote this article wanted to explain how the
government wanted to defund Planned Parenthood and how they would get their
money to help the community. Without planned parenthood, there are statistics
that say for example, ⅔ of their patients use medicaid for their health care.
2nd Prong - Due Wednesday, October 25, 2017 (by end of class)
2nd prong - Explain its current impact (Who is it affecting and how?)
1. First Current Impact Source
a. URL/Link (or, book title and author) https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-
defunding-planned-parenthood-could-affect-health-care/
b. Summary - In this article, the author states lots of research regarding, what will
happen if low-income women do not have access to these Planned Parenthood
clinics? Research shows that in 2014, Planned Parenthood patients had income at
or below 150% of the federal poverty level People rely on Planned Parenthood for
contraception or testing they need.
c. Important sentences (quotes) -
■ “Planned Parenthood affiliates received $553 million in government
funding in 2014, which accounted for more than 40% of their total $1.3
billion revenue. “
■ “For the first time in eight years, Dannenfelser and anti-abortion advocates
are on the offensive and hoping their electoral work will pay off.”
■ “Then a vote to defund Planned Parenthood came up in the Senate in 2015
as part of a budget reconciliation measure that Obama later vetoed,
ultimately Collins voted against it and Murkowski voted for it.”
■ “Although no federal money is spent on abortions except in cases of rape,
incest or where the mother’s life is at risk, about 40 percent of Planned
Parenthood’s revenue for other services — including contraception,
sexually transmitted infection testing and cancer screenings — comes
from the government, mostly through Medicaid.”
2. Second Current Impact Source
a. URL/Link (or, book title and author) -
https://students.com.miami.edu/netreporting/?page_id=2364
b. Summary - In the article it states that the defunding of this clinic would affect low
income men and women who rely on this clinic to get the proper health care they
need. Such as testing, vasectomies.
c. Important sentences (quotes) -
■ “Essentially, the bill would cut $300 million in federal aid and grants to
Planned Parenthood””
■ “ ...that de-funding Planned Parenthood would prevent taxpayer dollars
from being used to fund abortions.”
■ “Planned Parenthood offers an estimated three million women annually
with birth control, breast exams, pap tests, cervical cancer screenings, STI
testing and treatment and other health services – all which, are services
that made readily with the help of taxpayer money.”
■ “ To put things in perspective, Planned Parenthood’s 2008 Annual Report
said the organization provided a total of 10,943,609 services.”
b. Summary - This article is saying that most low-income women rely on Planned
Parenthood for birth control, or any reproductive needs. They are completely
removing access for these women, and men as well.
c. Important sentences (quotes) -
■ “Some states have tried to bar Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid
programs by claiming it isn’t qualified simply because it provides
abortions, separate from its participation in Medicaid.”
■ "Planned Parenthood saw 2.5 million patients in 2014. About three-
quarters of them have incomes below 150 percent of the poverty line, and
about 60 percent get their care through Medicaid or the federally funded
Title X family planning program.”
■ “The women most likely to lose access to care under the House bill live in
areas without other clinics serving low-income populations, CBO found.”
■ “Federal Medicaid funds can’t pay for abortions except in cases of danger
to the life of the mother, rape, or incest.”
b. Summary - In this article, Art Caplan is giving out important information about
why women need this clinic because it does not just offer abortions, but it also
offers quite important needs to be sexually ready and healthy.
b. Summary - Republicans are trying to rid of the healthcare that these clinics
provide. Per year, almost 2 million people go to Planned Parenthood for birth
control. Imagine that without these services what are women going to do.
