Wondering what these are, what they can do for you, and how they work? Got you. Keeping

1. Piracetam

Piracetam is the progenitor of the racetam family and it's the safest. A derivative of GABA. Its
effects are more noticeable if taken regularly.

Benefits:
 Enhances cognition slightly (via AMPA modulation and calcium channel inhibition)[1]
 Preserves membrane fluidity[1]
 Slight increase in short-term memory[3]
 Increases verbal learning (@ 4.8g/day for 3 weeks)4]
 Appears to be anti-inflammatory[5]

The effects for me were very subtle, which is to be expected, it's also the weakest racetam.
Music has more body to it and colors seem brighter. Words flow easier. Over time the effects
got a bit more noticeable (verbal fluidity and recall). Older people will notice more of a benefit.

How it works:
Appears to enhance cellular membrane fluidity (especially older people) [6]. Increases glucose
and oxygen consumption by neurons (evidence of increased metabolic function)[7][8] and it
also selectively activates brain cells during information processing[9]. Seems to act as a
vasodilator as well.

Most nootropic mechanisms of action (i.e. how they produce their effect via biochemical
means) are still disputed in the research. You'll see one paper saying this and another disputing
it. That's why anecdotal evidence is useful.

Dosage:
1600mg/day: I call this the "Dipping your toes in" dose.
4800mg/day: 1600mg taken 3x/day (most effective)[10]. The sweet spot dose for all the great
effects.
9600mg/day: Explained here[10]

I did what's called an "attack dose" for my first week. I blasted 4800mg/day for 7 days. Then I
ramped down to see what the minimal effective dose was for me. If you don't notice anything
at 4800mg/day for a week chances are it isn't for you. A few studies looking at therapeutic
effects of piracetam noted that 4.8g (4800mg) was the beginning of the sweet spot. Piracetam
seems to have a bell-shaped curve with regards to dosing just like Rhodiola[9]. More than
9.6g/day is probably overkill.

If you are worried: start low (1600mg/day for maybe a week) and then work your way up to
4800mg/day. I've noticed benefits from just 1600mg/day, so try that dosage out.

Notes:
A) Most racetams appear to cause depletion of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine [ACh] (via
stimulating ACh receptors), thus we need a way to replenish them. When I took a choline
source (commonly recommended alongside taking any racetam), I noticed headaches and jaw
tension. Due to everybody being somewhat different, I don't need a choline source with
piracetam. If you eat lots of eggs, chances are you don't either. If you notice headaches when
taking Piracetam alone, you need a source of choline most likely and ALCAR discussed below,
indirectly gives you that choline. The "attack dose" method above will quickly let you know if
you need a choline source because you'll get headaches, fatigue, and/or brain fog.

B) "[...] do NOT assume that piracetam necessitates a choline source for you personally, until
you have tried piracetam only first - without choline, established that this causes you negative
effects, which then go away after you start to take choline."[11]

C) Piracetam's effects last for about 8--12 hours [2].

D) Why take the afternoon stack 6-8 hours away? Piracetam's CNS half-life is about 7.7 hours
and taking more will allow you keep more in your system and potentially increase the effects
you had earlier in the day [1].

2. Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)

An amino acid formed from L-carnitine, produced naturally by the body.

Benefits:
 Increases alertness and mitochondrial energy capacity[12]
 Improves physical endurance when taken with caffeine[13]
 Improves energy levels and (slightly improves) fat-burning[14]
 Improves insulin sensitivity[15]
 Improves sperm quality (at 1g/day)[16]
 Anecdotally: improves memory and mental focus

How it works:
The version we care about: It is indirectly cholinergic. It contributes to acetylcholine production
(ACh helps cognition and nerve plasticity) and assists your mitochondria in producing energy. It
also increases levels of the brain's favorite energy source, glucose.

Dosage:
630mg-2500mg/day[12]: main dose range

300-500mg 2x/day: The "ease-in" dose.

Cholinergics seem to be associated with depression, back off if you start noticing symptoms of
it[17]. Moderation of cholinergics is key. Lots of people recommend taking a choline
supplement with racetams...I don't. ALCAR gives you more choline indirectly, so in theory, it's
safer.

4000mg/day: anecdotal recommended upper limit (below this amount, no excessive free
radicals are produced)[18,19,20]

Notes:
A) 1000mg-1500mg split into 2 dosages: When you need a little bit more energy, you upped
your noopept/piracetam a bit, or need to get a lot done that day.

B) Be sure you are getting your Vitamin C, it's needed so the body can convert L-carnitine to
(ALCAR)[21]
C) If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you are most likely deficient in l-carnitine (deficiency
symptoms mimic dementia and fatigue[22]) and could benefit from supplementation since it's
mostly found in red meat and in milk (a bit).

D) ALCAR tends to synergize better than choline sources with Piracetam (anecdotal
evidence)[11]

3. Rhodiola rosea

A bad motherf**ker of a plant. It grows in cold and high altitude regions around the world like
Scandinavia, the Arctic, Iceland, and the Alps. Vikings probably ate this stuff regularly. I'd call it
a super-adaptogenic herb.

Benefits:
 Very strong anti-fatigue effects[23]
 Improves memory and cognition[24,25]
 Early evidence suggests it's anti-estrogenic[26]
 Probably anti-depressive (when used daily) and treats mild to moderate depression with
no harmful effects[27]
 Enhances metabolism via enhancing mitochondrial function[28,29]
 Gives you energy without crashing afterwards

Rhodiola has so many benefits that you just need to take some and see for yourself. It's
especially useful for anyone involved in mentally taxing jobs and physically-demanding sports
(e.g. MMA, BJJ, wrestling, sprinting, etc.)

How it works:
Basically, there are three main compounds (out of many): salidroside, tyrosol and rosavin. They
work to reduce stress and fatigue in a multitude of ways. Salidroside (the main active
compound) stimulates your body to produce more mitochondria (how every cell in your body
gets and produces energy)[30] AND amps up energy via stimulating AMPK enzymes, the master
metabolic switch.
Dosage:
50mg: for daily fatigue (light to moderate) prevention
288–680 mg: for acute fatigue and anti-stress benefits[23]
>680mg: most likely won't work. Don't waste your money or time. The effective dose range
seems to be a bell-shaped curve[23]

The powder sort of hardens when wet and can be hard to get off or out of, your teeth. To solve
that problem just wet the finger and seal the half-capsule by holding it for 15-20 seconds or
carefully pour it on to the back of the tongue and quickly chase it with a drink.

I use and recommend Eclectic Institute Rhodiola and from HSW. Half a pill per day (~250mg)
will last you 6 months. No filler, just Rhodiola.

Note: Rhodiola is slightly stimulatory so take it when you need an energy boost. Avoid taking it
right before you plan on sleeping.

4. Magnesium

Behind vitamin D, magnesium is the second most common deficiency.

Benefits:
 The Threonate form may enhance learning abilities, working memory (tied to IQ), and
short- and long-term memory[31]
 Increases neural plasticity (helps learning, memory, and memory formation)[31]
 Improves sleep quality and promotes relaxation
 Plus many more than you can search PubMed for

In other words, to be on that alpha Zen level you NEED healthy magnesium levels, especially in
your brain.
How it works:
"[It] is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions
in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and
blood pressure regulation.[32]" Basically, a lot of enzymatic processes need magnesium.
Oversimplifying a bit, you need more of it since you are putting your brain into a higher gear.

The king of health and its faithful queen (your metabolism and thyroid hormone respectively)
require magnesium to sustain and generate ATP, the life-force of your body. Having a healthy
metabolism and healthy brain without sufficient magnesium is very hard.

Dosage:
200-400mg/day split into 2 dosages taken with food if it doesn't cause any GI problems.

Mike has discussed magnesium before, but I'll say this: if you could only take a few
supplements, in the context of our high-stress society, magnesium would be in the top 3.

It's fairly easy to know when you overdo it with magnesium: you get the runs. But stress causes
the body to use up more magnesium AND makes it harder to retain. So if you are stressed, you
may need slightly more.

What to buy and where:


Look for these forms of Magnesium: Threonate, citrate, glycinate (one of the most
bioavailable), taurate, malate, arginate, orotate, lysinate, ascorbate, 2-AEP

Examine.com says to go with the citrate form for general benefits and the L-threonate form for
nootropic benefits. You can get a chelated+threonate "brain" form of magnesium from
NaturalStacks.com. I get glycinate in powder form and take it with some OJ before bed. I also
use Epsom salt (Mg Sulfate) transdermally.

Pro tip: Look for Albion® magnesium chelates. They have a patented chelation process that
mimics the body's own chelation process, i.e. the body recognizes and absorbs it better.

5. L-Theanine
An amino acid that mainly comes from green and black tea. Oddly found also in one species of
edible mushroom.

Benefits:
 Learning and memory improvement (animal studies)[33]
 Neuroprotective[34]
 Mental and physical relaxation without sedation or sleepiness. Takes the “edge”
off.[35,36]
 Anxiety reducing properties[37]
 Increases alpha brain waves, a biomarker of relaxation.[38]
 Safe as hell[39]

How it works:
To oversimplify a bit: it can cross the blood-brain barrier, where it is thought to it increases
levels of inhibitory neurotransmitters that calm your nervous system and blocks production of
excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate, which it is chemically similar to[40]. It may also
perform actions like GABA, which a "downer" neurotransmitter that regulates the
parasympathetic nervous system (the one that calms you down). It's also thought to balance
mood via increasing glycine levels[41].

Dosage:
50–250 mg/day: Increases relaxation[42]
200mg/day: At a 1:1 ratio with caffeine (200mg each) it forms a synergy that improves
cognition and mental acuity[43]
400mg/day: dosages this high have been taken without side effects.[44]

Most notice the best alertness and energy effect from combining it in a 2:1 ratio with caffeine
(i.e. 100mg L-Theanine to 50mg caffeine)

If you know you’ll be experiencing anxiety...200mg sublingually 50-60 minutes before the
stressor should help.

What to buy and where:


Brand doesn't matter, look for Suntheanine (holds patent for 99% L-theanine) on the bottle and
get the cheapest one or if you are buying bulk powder, ask to see a CoA and "If the results
range between +7.5° and +8.5° then its L-Theanine. Racemic (DL) theanine would have a
specific rotation of around 0°.[45]"

Note: Tolerance has been anecdotally reported, though it's never happened for me at 200-
400mg. If you find yourself needing to take a larger dose to get the same positive effects, then
obviously cycle off of it for a while.

6. Caffeine
The world's most consumed stimulant.

Benefits:
Depend on if you use caffeine chronically (extended period of time) or acutely (rapid and
usually short busts). Caffeine tolerance is unlike the typical "take more to get the same effects"
you normally see with regards to substance tolerances. Some effects occur if you don't use
caffeine that often and then disappear once you start regular (chronic) consumption.

 Stimulatory
 Helps keep you awake
 Noticeable effects on alertness
 Multitude more here[46]

How it works:
Basically, it's stimulant that has a wide range of effects in the body[49].

Dosage:
50-100mg/day: New to caffeine / stimulant-sensitive
200mg/day: Typical dose to improve cognition[47]

1 cup of black coffee tends to have anywhere from 95-200mg of caffeine[48].

This US Navy Seal study noted the following: "Caffeine, in a dose-dependent manner, mitigated
many adverse effects of exposure to multiple stressors. Caffeine (200 and 300 mg) significantly
improved visual vigilance, choice reaction time, repeated acquisition, self-reported fatigue and
sleepiness with the greatest effects on tests of vigilance, reaction time, and alertness. [...] The
greatest effects of caffeine were present 1 h post-administration, but significant effects
persisted for 8 h.[47]"

Caffeine is one of those things you have to experiment with to find the right amount that
stimulants you without burning out your adrenals or giving you headaches and anxiety.
<500mg/day (~4-6 cups of plain coffee) and you should be clear of those symptoms though[48].
Caffeine can be deadly if you consume between 3-10 grams (3000-10000mg), stick to less than
500 milligrams per day. I recommend getting pills just so you have accurate doses already on-
hand, especially if you don't have a scale, caffeine pills are dirt cheap. If you are taking the pills
and drinking coffee/stimulant drinks be extra vigilant to keep your caffeine below 500mg/day.

"Many of caffeine’s effects, including fat burning, strength benefits, and euphoria, are subject
to tolerance, and may not occur in people used to caffeine, no matter how large the dose
is.[49]"

What to buy and where:


If you don't want to spend money on a scale, definitely get caffeine pills. Most seem to notice
that caffeine pills/powder give more of a kick than coffee does. Anecdotally, coffee+L-theanine
doesn't seem to work as well unless you take the L-theanine by itself first.

So, those other stack boosters?

Noopept and Oxiracetam.

Noopept
Similar to the racetam molecules. 1000x stronger than piracetam, acts almost like a pro-drug,
and it is structurally similar to the body's natural dipeptide, cycloprolylglycine (which happens
to be noopept's main metabolite).

Benefits:
 Increases expression of NGF and BDNF (important for growth, maintenance, survival of
brain cells and the formation of new ones)[50]
 Improves learning ability, memory, and memory storage[51]
 Increases ability to focus
 1000x more effective than piracetam[51]
 Appears to possess anxiety-reducing effects[51]
 May lower learned helplessness [52]
 Increases alertness and concentration

I’ve also noticed that colors are more vivid.

How it works:
Short version: Increase neutrophins (BDNF and NGF) and decreases activity of stress-induced
kinase enzymes (MAPKs) [53]. BDNF is necessary for long-term memory [54] and according to
Wikipedia, "BDNF secreted by contracting skeletal muscle has been found to play a role in
muscle repair, regeneration, and differentiation. [...] [it also] plays a role in peripheral
metabolism, myogenesis, and muscle regeneration."

Noopept may sensitize you to choline (theoretically boosts memory formation) which is good
since you'll be taking choline along with noopept and piracetam to prevent them from
overusing the brain's acetylcholine [50].

Dosages:
3-6mg/day: Sublingually. Enough to get me in "flow mode" and keep me focused for ~1.5 hours
10-30 mg/day: Sublingually (I shoot for 5 minutes, go as long as possible). For up to 6 weeks,
then cycle off for 4 weeks (Russian literature recommended)[55]

 Anecdotally, taking it sublingually will give you better absorption. I can't remember
where I read it but, something like only 10% of noopept is bioavailable from just
swallowing it, since it's basically just 2 peptides + a pheynlacteyl group bonded together
(stomach acid mostly breaks it apart and you only get aminos).
 Since you’re a beginner, only take Noopept on days you really need it.
 You don't build up a tolerance to it so you shouldn't need to ever increase your dosage
beyond 30mg/day. Don't eyeball those dosages; get a sensitive enough scale and a
calibration weight.
 The more often you take it, the better the effects become [50]

Oxiracetam
Also a derivative of GABA. Seems to be stronger and quicker-acting that Aniracetam and

Adjusts AMPA-sensitive glutamate (the "excitatory") receptors that are crucial for memory
