there and a large reading table
in the center. Most attractive to
us almost were the shelves and
shelves of very good books of
every kind. How Pasty would
love that!

ticularly the powerful Japanese
civilian, Mr. Kubota, a pre-war
palay dealer and President of
the Japanese Association in Ca-

task of attending to the “hous-

ternees who were detained at
the Provincial Jail in Naga (the
area fronting Plaza Rizal where
the building of Puregold now
stands). I wish to conclude this
negotiation with an entry on
March 8, 1942:

cial part of it. He said he wasn’t
afraid we would try to get away
but he didn’t like the Catholics
–I tried to urge a bit more., but it
was just like butting up against
the stone wall.
