decimals.
MA.4.5.b Add and subtract fractions having like and unlike denominators that are limited to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12,
and simplify the resulting fractions, using common multiples and factors

• Discuss the warm up question with students as an intro into the lesson on fraction word problems
Show fraction word problems video

• After the video, discuss the four steps with students and do another practice problem as a whole class
◦ A mango is cut into 10 slices. If Eric ate 7 slices and his sister ate 2 slices, what part of the mango did they eat?
Do one more example problem as a class that uses fractions in the problem instead of whole numbers, again following the
four steps from the video
• Sharon weeded 5/6 of her yard in the morning and 1/8 of the yard in the afternoon. What part of the yard did she weed
altogether?
• As students do the example in their journals, have them write the answer on a white board and show it as a class to
see immediate feedback on if students are understanding how to answer the problem.
Do more examples if students are having trouble and continue having students show their work in their journals and their
answers on the white boards.
• In my fruit basket there are 12 pieces of fruit. I am giving 5 pieces of fruit away to my friends. What fraction of fruit will I
have left for myself?
• Maria spent 1/3 of the money her grandparents gave her on an adventure book. She also spent 1/8 of the money on a
bag of candy. What fraction of the payment has Maria spent?
Have students choose 2 word problems to complete on the word problems worksheet, individually for practice (attached)
• Students can finish all 4 if they have time
If students begin to finish early, have them do Reflex Math or work on IXL if they have finished Reflex math
