STEP 5 : ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENT

The emphasis on assessment is an important one as performing appropriate and well-thought

out assessment helps us determine what objectives have or have not been learned by the learners
and will also help in performing the formative evaluation. For this course, we emphasizes on
how does te instrument being designed to determine whether the students really understand the
objectives and how far could they excel. For this section, there are few assessments will be
carried out after each of the lesson to measure the student’s understanding.

1. Listening

The students will have to answer a fill-in the blank questions that consist of 5 sets of
different levels which will test the students’ ability to really give excellent feedback based on the
lessons that they have learnt. If the students have completed the first level assessment, then they
can proceed to the the next level which will shows how much a student has progressed based on
their score. This assessments will be handed out by the teacher at the end of the class and the
students will be given two days to complete it.

2. Speaking

In speaking, the students have discussed about the effects of acid rains in group discussion.
They have also come out with the task presentation about the effects of acid rain. For the
assessment, the student need to prepare themselves to give a short informative speech regarding
the environmental issues that can be related to the lesson. This assessment will be done
individually and the the students will be given one week to prepare their informative speech and
the duration is not more than 3 minutes. With this, teachers will be able to evaluate on how
efficient they able to deliver their speech by using the correct grammar and pronunciation.
3. Reading
For the reading assessment, the students will be given 3 sets of comprehension practice
that contains different types of essay that still discuss about the acid rains but written in
different formats such as the informal letter, article and dialogue. This is to test the
students’ ability to extract the information from a different context of reading materials.
The students will be given 2 days to complete each of the practice and the teacher will
discuss the answers with the students at the end of the lesson. The students will also have
to answer sets of multiple choice questions that will be tested based on the corresponding
reading materials.

4. Writing
Writing is evaluated on how well a student can compile all of the information that they
gained, including the right usage of sequence connectors with appropriate grammar
according to the theme given. To evaluate the students’ achievement on this particular
skills, an ongoing journal assessment need to be carried out. Because journaling is a
combination of writing and reflection, it is a tool that is suited for both instructional and
assessment purposes in online learning environments (Hansen, 2005). The students will be
given the task to write a weekly journal and they need to submit their journal on the padlet
provided by the teacher.
