17th century vellum map of the Wately lands, King´s County, that has been removed from the volume. The map was written
and drawn in different colours of inks.
Condition: the map and volume are in good general condition. The map is too large so it has been folded into the volume, that produced
important creases. The corner with the shield is the most creased area. The green pigment is not stable, possibly because of its old binder.
TREATMENTS
Volume Dry and wet surface cleaning was carried out. Repairing of tears.
Map It was decided to remove the map from the volume and store flat because of its large dimensions. Dry surface cleaning was carried out.
Reshape of the map by applying local weights during the period of 4 weeks using the environment humidity in the studio.
The objetive was to flatten the map by applying lowers levels of moisture.
Consolidation of green pigments with gelatin and a fine brush, using a magnifying lens.
Tha map was lightly humidified in a chamber with an ultrasonic humidifier and stretched in a frame. It was localy humidify in some areas
with an ultrasonic mist applied with a small cannula. Tha map was flattened under weight during several day and re-housed in a Mylar®
pocket.

Protection of historic photos by attaching photon flaps.

“Grange Gorman/Death and Discharge/ Clinical Records.
Description: Folders conteaning clinical information of each patient, with a reference number and a photo.

PROCEDURE
Placing squares of photon paper over each photograph making sure that it is all well cover. For this purpose in some cases the text above the photo remained
below the photon paper. This one is placed at the top between lines of text and in the side over the edge of the record.

To adhere the photon paper we used Klucel G made up to 10-15% w/v with ethanol.
It was applied with a stiff hog brush on strips of approximately 10 cm x 2 cm of Spiders wet strength tarantula tissue.
These must be slightly shorter than the photon paper to ensure that they don´t obstruct lifting the flap up to view the photograph.

The text under the photon paper can still be seen Applying Klucel G at the tissue makng Placing the tissue half between text lines and

Description: large maps on paper mounted on linen. They present diferent types and colors of inks.

PROCEDURE
- Dry surface cleaning at the obverse and reverse of the map.
The reverse of the maps are cleaned using a vacuum. Only maps
with a dark layer of dirt on the surface are cleaned with an extra
hard Wishab (blue back removed) and a brush before vacuumed.
The front is cleaned with smoke sponge and brush.
- Aqueous surface cleaning at the obverset of the map.
The front of the maps are cleaned using swabs. Then the maps are
flattened in a hydraulic press.

Consolidation, repairing and flattened

Most of the maps presents damage through use: curls and dog-ears, frayed edges, paper fracture. They also present previous interventions and in some areas
they are detached from the linen or they are broken in half. The front of the maps are consolidated with wheat startch paste applied with a brush.

Fractured and detached parts of the map pleaced and adhered on the linen At the back, the linen is also consolidated with wheat
starch paste, adhering it to the paper map.
In case of missing support (if there is map at the front)
linen repairs are added with the wheat starch paste.
