INTRODUCTION:

Mental health has always played a vital role in the everyday life of every human
being. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of
well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope
with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to
make a contribution to her or his community”. Mental health is a “level of
psychological well-being or an absence of a mental disorder”. Mental health is a
broad field which includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being and
how these affect the way we think, feel and behave. Our mental health also helps
us control ourselves especially how we deal with stress, relate to other people and
make choices in our everyday life. Our mental health could also be affected by
many factors like stress, family genes such as genes or brain chemistry, life
experiences especially trauma or abuse, and even family history of mental
problem. Mental health is often mistaken as a substitute of mental health
conditions like depression, anxiety conditions, schizophrenia and etc. but rather
both are different. Mental health refers to wellness rather than illness. Mental
health is something that is essential to our wellbeing. All human being have
different kind of mental health. It is in how we control and stick ourselves with that
affects our mental health, It could be a positive or negative mental health.

CASE PRESENTATION:

We made a sample case presentation about Mental Health base from my research
and from Ms. Shiela Wenceslao. Mae Ann recently got stressed out of the
overloading school works she needed to finish and pass by next week. She doesn’t
know where to start and how to start. She was feeling a lot of mix emotions. She
was angry of the teachers for giving her such big amount of school works. She was
anxious that she might fail her subjects and might disappoint her parents. She was
sad because she don’t know what to do. She can’t even hang out with her friends
and felt left out and lonely. She was socially unstable. All of this things made her
stressed out to the point she can’t focus and don’t know what she should do. She
decided to seek help so she went to the school’s guidance counselor office to seek
advices on what she should do to solve this problem.
TREATMENT:

When Mae Ann visited the guidance counselor office, she got emotional and
psychological support from Ms. Grande, the school’s guidance counselor and a
licensed psychologist who graduated Suma cum laude from the University of San
Jose-Recoletos. She received a kind of treatment which is peer support where she
received help from Ms. Grande who also suffered the same problem before back
when she was still in college. She said being an honor student and dean’s lister as a
college student put her in so much stress and pressure because many people
expected so much from her academically. She was so stress out with all the
overloading school works she needs to make every night. She even said she only
had 3 hours of sleep because she needs to simultaneously study and make projects.
Not just, Ms. Grande shared her school life to Mae Ann but she also shared some
tips and advices that she should do. She said that time management is the key to
avoid being pressured and stressed by the overloading school works. She said she
must manage her time wisely to complete her tasks one by one.

OUTCOME AND FOLLOW UP:

After the said treatment from Ms. Grande, Mae Ann felt normal and contented. She
came to realize that this kind of mental health issues is normal in her age especially
she’s in her adolescence. With this, she was able to know how to control and
understand her mental health. She is now more aware of the importance of mental
health in our daily life. She now knows the things she should do to take care her
mental health. Ms. Grande was glad that she was able to help what Mae Ann really
needed. After a week, she was able to accomplish every school works she needs to
finish on time. She managed her time wisely. Not just did it made her feel renewed
and accomplished but it also benefited her mental health. She felt psychologically,
emotionally and socially well. She was again able to spend time with her friends
while at the same time manage her school works well. She thanked Ms. Grande for
the help and guidance.
DISCUSSION:

The sample story me and Ms. Shiela made up is an example of how one’s
environment and life could affect his/her mental health. Mae Ann was really
stressed out with all the school works and it totally affected her mental health. She
was psychologically, emotionally and socially unstable. She went to the school’s
guidance office to seek for help and she received a kind of mental health treatment
which was peer support when Ms. Grande helped herself overcome her difficulties.
With the peer support she gained from Ms. Grande , she able to re-establish her
mental health to a positive. Making her the person she is today a AB Psychologist
who is willing to help people with these kinds of experiences in their lives.

OUTPUT OF DISCUSSION:

I learned what mental health is, its treatment and most especially its importance to
our life. With this, I am now more aware of how mental health could help me as a
person from my emotional down to my psychological wellbeing. Mental health
wellness is truly essential for all of us. Having a good mental health is essential at
all periods in our individual life from our childhood to our adulthood. When we
have good mental health, we are able to experience and manifest positivity,
happiness, positive community participation and most importantly healthy
relationship with other people including our family and friends.

CONCLUSIONS:

Mental health is essential in our life. Mental health has a big impact on our life.
Good mental health can lead to good things while Bad Mental Health can lead to
bad things. It is important for one to develop good mental health to have an overall
positive wellness psychologically, emotionally and socially. One can achieve
positive mental health by having support system. It could be from the positive
people around or the positive thoughts you have inside. What we can do as people
in the society is to seek help with people with more experience than us to learn
more about life and ow to live it. We must also consult our friends and peers who
are the ones close to us in guiding us in the choices we made. Lastly it is up to
ourselves to consider this as a difficulty in our lives. It is for us to determine each
experience that can guide us in the future because life is worth living if you have
trust in yourself and to others around you.
