Earth and Life Science August 10, 2017

I. Objectives
a. Content Standards
Geologic processes that occur on the surface of the Earth such as weathering, erosion, mass
wasting, and sedimentation (include the role of ocean basins in the formation of sedimentary
rocks)
b. Performance Standards
The learners shall be able to make a plan that the community may use to conserve and
protect its resources for future generations.
c. Learning Competencies/Objectives
The learners will be able to describe how rocks undergo weathering, explain how the
products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere, make a report on
how rocks and soil move downslope due to the direct action of gravity.
II. Content
Exogenic Processes
Learning Resources
 Curriculum Guide in Earth and Life Science
 Earth and Life Science Teacher’s Guide
 Earth and Life Science Textbook
 Power Point Presentation
 Projector
 Laptop
III. Procedures
Review
What is the name that wears away existing rock??
Motivation
Which type of rock is most likely found in these cliff layers?
Activity
Brainstorm:
Group the students into 4 groups and ask the groups to list down how rocks break down.
a. Analysis
 How rocks break down?
 What is weathering?
 What are the types of weathering?
 What are the factors that affect weathering?
b. Application
Perform the Activity Given
c. Abstraction
Weathering breaks down and loosens the surface minerals of rock so they can be transported
away by agents of erosion such as water, wind and ice. There are two types of weathering: mechanical
and chemical. Mechanical Weathering. Mechanical weathering is the disintegration of rock into smaller
and smaller fragments.
IV. Evaluation
 to describe how rocks undergo weathering,
 explain how the products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere,
make a report on how rocks and soil move downslope due to the direct action of gravity
V. Assignment
Study in advance Mechanical weathering

Review
What is the name that wears away existing rock??
Motivation
Which type of rock is most likely found in these cliff layers?
Activity
Brainstorm:
Give students a few blank copies of the Rock Description Table and have them fill it out for geologic
materials at home or on their way home. Be sure to instruct them that they are NOT allowed to
describe any roads.
Analysis
 How rocks break down?
 What is weathering?
 What are the types of weathering?
 What are the factors that affect weathering?
g. Application
Perform the Activity Given
h. Abstraction
Mechanical weathering, also called physical weathering, causes rocks to crumble. Water seeps
into cracks and crevices in rock. If the temperature drops low enough, the water will freeze. When water
freezes, it expands. The ice then works as a wedge. It slowly widens the cracks and splits the rock. When
ice melts, water performs the act of erosion by carrying away the tiny rock fragments lost in the split.

 explain how the products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere,
make a report on how rocks and soil move downslope due to the direct action of gravity

I. Objectives
a. Content Standards

Geologic processes that occur within the Earth

b. Performance Standards
The learners shall be able to make a plan that the community may use to conserve and
protect its resources for future generations.
c. Learning Competencies/Objectives
The learners will be able to describe where the Earth’s internal heat comes from,
describe how magma is formed (magmatism).
II. Content
Endogenic Processes
Learning Resources
 Curriculum Guide in Earth and Life Science
 Earth and Life Science Teacher’s Guide
 Earth and Life Science Textbook
 Power Point Presentation
 Projector
 Laptop
III. Procedures
Review
Magma and Lava are both molten (melted) rock. What is the difference between them?
Motivation
Which type of rock is most likely found in these cliff layers?
a. Activity
Brainstorm:
Group the students into 4 groups and ask the groups looks at the effect of pouring water onto
brown sugar to simulate the effect of water on soluble rock. Looks at the residue left after water
samples have evaporated to show that water can dissolve minerals.
b. Analysis
 How does chemical weathering make it easier for a rock to be mechanically weathered? What is
weathering?
 How does water chemically weather rocks?
c. Application
Perform the Activity Given
d. Abstraction
Chemical weathering changes the materials that make up rocks and soil. Sometimes, carbon
dioxide from the air or soil combines with water. This produces a weak acid, called carbonic acid that
can dissolve rock.

IV. Evaluation
 to describe how rocks undergo weathering,
 explain how the products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere,
make a report on how rocks and soil move downslope due to the direct action of gravity
V. Assignment
Study in types of chemical weathering.
