Dear Selection Committee,
I hope this letter finds you all well. As I am sure you are aware, there is an opening in a leadership position
regarding the beautiful country of The United Empire. Just from observing the country’s development thus far, I can
already conclude that this land has unmeasurable potential. However, I believe that one can always improve and
continue to strive for unity, stability (both economically and politically), and success within a newly founded country.
That, my friends, is where I think my assistance can come in.
As a very young boy, I have always been surrounded by rigorous governmental issues regarding France; I
took the French throne at only five years old, succeeding several of my family members. With the help and support
from many qualified and successful advisers, I eventually decided to take control of France’s government officially in
the year of 1661. Once I truly stepped into the role of France’s new king, I knew there was work to be done since
France was in disarray. One of the many skills of being an effective leader is knowing when to ask for help and to
surround yourself with people whom you think will best help you achieve your goals and reach success. In this
particular case, I wanted the very best resources to help me guide France and its people on the path of success. So, I
appointed intendents. They were royal officials who collected taxes, recruited soldiers and implemented policies in
the provinces. This cemented the relations between the middle class and the monarchy. Another important skill to
obtain as a successful leader is to improve what is already provided. For example, I made sure that the French
military was the strongest in Europe while gaining territories around the continent. One last essential skill to take into
consideration when electing a new leader is to know that their intentions are to improve not only the country from a
political and economical standpoint, but also to improve the lives of the people. After all, if it’s not for the betterment
of the people, then who is it really for? In regards to France’s economy, I wanted France to follow mercantilist
principles in order to support the economy. In addition, the French government encouraged business/industry, placed
high taxes on imports in order to protect French manufactures, and encouraged overseas colonization.
Just to place my accomplishments for France into a different perspective, I would like to compare myself to
another leader, Charles I. During his reign, he dissolved Parliament as he attempted to take advantage of them with
his leadership position. Like I mentioned above, it is essential for a leader to know when to ask for help and to
establish good relationshipsj with their fellow advisors. I wanted to make sure I developed strong relationships with
those I worked with so that we could work together in harmony to achieve the most success. For example, my finance
minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, and I worked together to make sure that France followed mercantilist principles.
Another difference between Charles I and I is the fact that he was tried and later executed by his own subjects for
high treason. I think this occurred because he did not put the lives of his subjects first. When electing a new leader, it
is necessary to know that they always realize that the main purpose of their rule is to better the lives of the people. For
instance, I always put the lives of my people first, especially when I was implementing certain economic policies and
institutions relating to music and the arts.
As I have mentioned previously, I truly think that I embody the very important qualities of an effective leader
and would be honored to represent The United Empire as their leader. I hope you review my letter of candidacy and
consider me for the leadership position.
