ES 230 Continuum Mechanics I

Long Examination 4 Due date: 1 pm, 9 December 2017

Problem A. A Stokean fluid of uniform depth h steadily flows down, under the force of
gravity, an inclined, infinite plate which makes an angle θ with the horizontal plane.
The fluid has a viscosity µ.

1. Based on the given information, simplify the continuity equation.

2. Express the equations of motion in terms of the velocity components. Simplify
them based on the given information.
3. State the boundary conditions. Explain briefly why they are the boundary con-
ditions.
4. Now, assume that the fluid has a constant density ρ.
∂p
(a) Find vx . Explain why = 0.
∂x
(b) Determine the stress field in the fluid.
(c) Determine p the pressure distribution in the fluid. Let pA be the atmospheric
pressure.

Problem B. Show that, for the plane stress case, the general form of the biharmonic equa-
tion in Cartesian coordinates is given by

∇4 φ = −(1 − ν) ∇2 V,

where φ is the Airy stress function and V is a potential function.

Problem C. A circular, solid cylinder of radius b and of infinite length in the z−direction
is subject to an external compressive pressure po .

1. Is this a plane stress or plane strain problem? Explain.

2. Express the equations of equilibrium in terms of the non-zero components of
displacement. Assume the body forces to be negligible.
3. State the boundary conditions. Explain briefly why they are the boundary con-
ditions.
4. Solve for the displacement vector.
5. Solve for all the non-zero components of the stress tensor. Compute their values
at r = 0.
6. Solve for all the non-zero components of the strain tensor.
