State University of New York Calculus H Course Outline

Instructor: Mr. George Engel and Dr. Mary Ann Gavioli

COURSE TITLE: CALCULUS I

TEXTBOOK: CALCULUS GRAPHICAL, NUMERICAL, ALGEBRAIC

FINNEY, THOMAS, DEMANA AND WAITS
ADDISON-WESLEY PUBLISHING COMPANY, 1994

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is the first course in the Calculus sequence.
Students enrolled in this course should have successfully completed both an intermediate
algebra and a pre-calculus(Math 12) course. The course will include the discussion of
limits, continuity, differentiation of functions, application of differentiation and
integration.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: To successfully complete this course, the students must master
the following mathematical topics through class discussion and problem-solving
pertaining to:
A. The Cartesian Plane and Functions
B. Limits and Continuity of Functions
C. Differentiation of functions of one variable
D. L‟Hopital‟s Rule and Indeterminate Form
E. Techniques of Integration and Applications of Integration

EVALUATION: Grading will be based upon quizzes, unit tests, mid-term and final
exams and homework grades. Students are expected to be present for all classes, quizzes
and exams. Make-up quizzes and exams must be made up within one week of a legal
absence. Students requiring testing accommodations for a documented disability should
notify the instructor at the beginning of the semester.

GENERAL COMMENTS: Students are expected to come to class prepared with a

textbook, notebook, pen and pencil and a graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-83+).
Homework will be checked daily and will be included as part of the quarter average as
described in the course requirements. Completion of homework is necessary for
successful mastery of the topics.

Calculus H
Finding the slope of tangent lines by calculator and by limits.
f  x  h  f  x
We have used the definition of slope of the tangent, m  lim to find
h 0 h
slope of the tangent lines for several examples, such as y  x 2 .
We can also use the calculator to find the slope of the tangent line by using the nDERIV
function. (MATH 8 on calculator).
I. Using nDERIV
Notation for nDERIV: nDERIV(function, x, number you are calculating slope at)
Ex 1: Find the slope of the tangent line to at .
STEP 1: Enter the function you want to find the derivative of in Y1 of the
graphing menu of your calculator.
STEP 2: Press MATH 8. You will see “NDERIV(“ on your screen. Now press
Y1,x,3). Your screen should look like: Now press
enter. You should see an answer of 6 on your screen.
Note: You may also enter the function directly where the Y1 is written if you
wish. It would look like:

Ex 2: Find slope of tangent line to y  3x 2 at x  2 using the example above as a guide.

If you enter it properly, you will get the value of the slope of the tangent line.
Ex 3: Find the slope of the tangent line to y  x at x  1 .
II. Using the “Draw” program
You can also find slopes of tangent lines by graphing the tangent line and reading the
tangent line at the bottom of the screen with m = slope in y  mx  b form.
STEP 1: graph y  x
STEP 2: Press “Trace” button
STEP 3: Press “Draw” 5
STEP 4: Press 1 (for x  1 )
You will see an equation at the bottom of the screen. It is the
equation of the tangent line to y  x at x  1 , as shown in the
image to the right. You should read the slope value as ½ or 0.5 .
(note: there may be rounding error.)
To clear the tangent line press “Draw” 1.
Ex 4: Find slope of the tangent line to y  x  1 at x  3 using the “Draw” program as
shown above.

Ex 5: Find slope of the tangent line to y  x  1 at x  3 using nDERIV.

If you find the slope using derivatives the equation
should be solved for y using and
then use the chain rule to find the derivative

so that when is 0 and the

Today we will use a technique to find called implicit differentiation so that we do not
have to solve for y in the equation.

We find derivative for each

need to write next to it . The

final step is to solve for as

Calc H

You may recall that when we used our calculator to find area under or above a curve we
had to adjust for signs. The calculator assigned a negative value to an area below the x-
axis.

We now define the integral symbol  between 2 x values a and b to be the “signed” area
summed up.
b
We will learn how to evaluate  f ( x)dx without a calculator using algebra.
a
b
For now, to evaluate  f ( x)dx without a calculator:
a
b
Note that the fundamental theorem of calculus tells us that  f ( x)dx  F  b   F  a  .
a

Where F  x  is the anti-derivative of f   x 

5. Now let us evaluate  x  x 2  2  dx . Notice that the integrand is a product of two
3

functions. In this case we use a process called u-substitution to find the anti-derivative.
Step 1: Assign a u. In this particular problem we would let u  x2  2
Step 2: find the derivative of u. For this problem it would be du  2 x  dx Notice that
there is an x and a dx in the integral above. We need to replace that with the du. That
can only be accomplished by first moving the coefficient to the side with the du. I.E.
1
du  x  dx .
2
1
Step 3: Substitute in u and du. Your integral now looks like  u 3du
2

Step 4: find the anti-derivative.

Step 5: Replace the u with the original and evaluate using the original bounds.
