PalmGHG Calculator
Version 3.0.1
19th May 2017
Scope: International
4. There are two links for the Calculator, PalmGHG V 3.0.1 (Existing User-Lite File) and
PalmGHG V 3.0.1 (New User-Main File), which one should I download?
If your laptop or computer currently is installed with PalmGHG Version 2.1.1, please
download the PalmGHG Version 3.0.1 (Existing User-Lite File). If not, please download
PalmGHG Version3.0.1 (New User-Main File), as there are some background engines files
required for the running of the calculator.
5. I’ve been using my company’s own reporting system (Other than PalmGHG Calculator)
for emission monitoring. Can I still use the same report to comply with Criteria 5.6.3?
No. As stated under RSPO P&C (2013) Criteria 5.6.3, “PalmGHG or RSPO endorsed
equivalent tool is to be used to assess, monitor and report GHG emissions”. You will need
to send your report with detail information on the methodologies and relevant Emission
Factors associated with the calculation to RSPO Emission Reduction Working Groups
RSPO-REF-T04-008 V1.0 ENG 2
(ERWG) for endorsement. Please take note that endorsement will only be provided for
methodologies and accounting boundary that deem equivalence to PalmGHG Calculator
for ensuring comparability and consistency in accounting and reporting.
As of Mei 2017, RSPO ERWG has not endorsed any other methodology or accounting
boundary.
6. When do I need to do public reporting for monitoring and reporting of GHG emissions
using PalmGHG Calculator?
Beginning 1st January 2017, public reporting of GHG emissions using RSPO PalmGHG
Calculator or RSPO endorsed equivalent tool is mandatory.
8. How do I make public reporting on my GHG emissions monitoring and reporting using
PalmGHG Calculator?
Summary of GHG emissions calculated using PalmGHG Calculator is to be included by CB
in their annual audit summary report using the template provided by RSPO which is
available from
http://www.rspo.org/news-and-events/announcements/announcement-on-c56-public-
reporting-starting-from-1st-january-2017
11. I have additional water treatment technology in my mill to further reduce my final
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reading of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). Can I take my
final COD reading after this process?
No. In order to ensure the uniformity in measuring initial and final COD reading, all users
must ensure initial reading is taken before POME enters anaerobic digestion and final
reading taken after POME leaves anaerobic digestion but before the POME enters aerobic
digestion.
13. My mill is having audit mid of August 2017. What data should I use?
PalmGHG requires 12 months’ data for a complete calculation of GHG emissions. The
period can be either January to December or July to June at the discretion of the company.
For the case above, the company can use data from Jan 2016 -Dec 2016 or July 2016 – June
2017.
1) January to December (one cut-off option) follows starting of calendar year. Advantage
of using this data period is, it will be a synchronized reporting with Annual Communication
of Progress (ACOP) and simple for analysis. Disadvantage is the possibility that two
consecutive audit report will be using the same GHG data. For example, audit at March
2016 will use data from Jan 2015 - Dec 2015. Audit at Jan 2017 will also be using January
2015 - Dec 2015 due to unavailability of January 2016 – December 2016 data.
2) July to June (two cut-off option) follows start of calendar year of July – Jun period.
Advantage of using this period is, there won’t be possibilities for two consecutive audit
reports using the same GHG data. Disadvantage is it will be challenging for analysis and
this report will not be synchronized with ACOP reporting.
14. PalmGHG Calculator provided three calculation options, can I use ‘Exclude LUC Emission’
option for my monitoring and reporting of GHG Emissions?
No. Calculation option of ‘Exclude LUC Emission’ is only to be used during implementation
period. Starting 1st January 2017, all monitoring and reporting of GHG emissions should
include emissions from Land Use Change.
15. Is it mandatory for me to account emissions of Palm Kernel Crusher facility integrated
with my mill?
No, it’s not mandatory. Palm Kernel Crusher facility operations fall outside the certification
scope of Criterion 5.6 and the RSPO P&C 2013.
Any other types of forest that falls outside this definition are allowed to use custom values
with appropriate reference provided.
17. Can I claim emissions reductions through conservation sequestration from areas I
supported through remediation and compensation procedure?
Depending on the activities and location of the areas designed for remediation and
compensation. Should the areas fall outside of the certification scope of the mill, no claim
of conservation sequestration should be made.
Should the areas fall within the scope of certification, but the activities for managing the
areas are indeed for remediation and compensation, no claim should be made, as there is
no additionality.
19. Can Independent Smallholders certified through Group Certification Document use
PalmGHG Calculator for reporting of GHG emissions under 5.6.3?
Yes. PalmGHG Calculator V3.0.1 is also designed for smallholders. Smallholders Group will
use ‘No Mill’ option to monitor and report group’s average annual GHG emissions per
tonnes of Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) produced.
Example:
In year 2005, 50 ha of disturbed forest was planted with oil palm. In year 2016 (< 25years)
5ha from the 50ha was cleared for replanting.
To calculate the remaining emission for 14 years:
• Firstly, identify the tCO2e/yr of the planted area. This value can be obtained from
respective Estate Summary >>> Emission Calculation sheet (Planting data
statement) >>> column tCO2e/yr (including other land use) >>> refer to respective
row where land will be cleared as shown.
• Extracting the emission (tCO2e/yr) from the planting block of which replanting take
place, you will need to calculate the emission per ha. The emission per ha of this
specific planting block could be done by dividing the emission (tCO2e/yr) by the total
planted area. In this case, would be 990.29/50 = 19.81 tCO2e/ha/yr
• In accounting the crop sequestration of oil palm (RSPO default of 9.36 tCO2e/ha/yr,
calculate the final emissions of per ha per year for the respective planting block.
This can be done through deducting the crop sequestration rate from the emission
rate. Example: 19.81 – 9.36 = 10.44 tCO2e/ha/yr.
• Include this emission into your total net emissions (field and mill) within the final
PalmGHG report generated and have it allocated to CPO and PK produced, using
the below calculation formulate respective:
o (CPO) tCO2e/tCPO: total emission (tCO2e) * (1/(1+(kernel extraction rate
(KER)/oil extraction rate (OER))))/tCPO
o (PK) tCO2e/tPK: total emission (tCO2e) * (1-(1/(1+(kernel extraction rate
(KER)/oil extraction rate (OER)))))/tPK
