Lens Based Recording Techniques in Art & Design

Assignment 1
Task A
For this task, I have been asked to Research the work artists within my chosen medium from
a wide range of genres in order to understand the visual signs and messages they use in
their works. In this section, I will be highlighting and explaining each of my examples by
elaborating on the genre, type, tone and message portrayed in them.

For my first example, I have chosen one of the artwork

pieces from the comic book “Shingeki no Kyojin” or
more commonly known as “Attack on Titan”. The
genres that Attack on Titan would mostly fall under
would be Dark fantasy and Post-Apocalyptic fiction. This
specific artwork is the cover image for Volume 21 of the
comic book. I will dissect this image and highlight the
key features and messages that are portrayed in this
image. From this image alone, the artist Hajime Isayama
has drawn it to specifically draw attention to the book
that we see in the image and the reaction on each of
the surrounding people’s faces. In coherence to the plot
line, we know that they have been looking for this book
for a long time and have finally reached that goal. But
as we see from the image, the expressions on everyone’s faces portray the importance of
what’s inside the book. This artwork also portrays the very serious tone in which the story is
trying to tell, as in this book holds the answers to a lot of questions those within the comic
book series have and contributes a lot to the backstory of the comic. Within this cover
image, there are also dark looming shadows behind the characters. In relevance to the story
of this comic, these shadows can be seen to portray the dark future ahead of these
characters after what is in the book is revealed, as it changes their lives in extreme ways.
Another feature of this image we can highlight is the use of colour and tone. The colours in

3
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

the image are very dark and dreary, with only light shining on their faces, as said before, to
highlight their fearsome expressions. With the tone in this image, it makes use of warm
toned colours as this is the style of the era that this world is set in. Finishing off this image of
Shingeki no Kyjojin, the artist has made a good variation of expressions, messages and
colour shown in his artwork.
For my second example, I will dissect an image from
the comic book, “Boku no Hero Academia” or more
so commonly referenced to in the English
community, “My Hero Academia”. The genres for
this manga would be Action Adventure, Superhero
and Comedy. For context, the story to My Hero
Academia is all about superpowers, as it follows a
young boy named, “Deku” as he grows as a person
with both his superpowers and his friends alongside
him, with the downfall of some of those around
him. In this particular image, the artist Kohei
Horikoshi has portrayed many things in such a small
place. On the left is the character Bakugou and on
the right, is the protagonist Deku. Both of these
characters grew up together but Bakugou resorted to hate Deku due to him surpassing him
in power. Within this image, there are many things that point to the divide between both of
these main characters. The first thing we can highlight is the stand-offish nature between
the two, as we see Bakugou with a hate filled look on his face and Deku with a look more so
of the nature of trying to stand up for himself against his rival. With the bold colours in the
background, we can point out that there is a large black tear in between both of the
characters. This refers back to my point earlier in that, they are divided by their different
outlooks on what makes a hero and their abilities, with also how Bakugou resents Deku for
his powers. The tone in this image is very bold, as it uses primary colours like red and black,
which show the seriousness of the situation and the image stands out extremely well
compared to previous art that this artist has done. This image is a good example of
contrasting two separate characters in a story without actually giving away any of the story
to the viewer.
4
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

For my third example, I have chosen to show the

artwork from Hirohiko Araki’s “JoJo’s Bizarre
Adventure: Stardust Crusaders”. The genres of this
manga are Action Adventure, Comedy and Fantasy.
This specific artwork for the final volume of the series,
promotes the ongoing fight between the main
protagonist and the villain. From this artwork we can
see the tense atmosphere and rivalry between the two
characters. The colour within this image makes use of
the contrast between both blue and yellow, a common
theme within this universe, which makes the
characters and the background stand out from one
another in a very eye-catching way. The author,
Hirohiko Araki, has made a good use of filling the size
of the canvas with both characters, as in this certain
volume of the manga it is the focus and thus the background is just a plain colour instead of
something that would take away from the main focus of the manga volume cover. With this
imagery, there is many things we can highlight. What I will focus on for this point, is how the
characters are interacting with one another. The author has put across a vivid message into
this imagery if you are familiar with the story. Essentially, the main character on the right,
Jotaro Kujo, is staring right at the antagonist on the left, DIO. This symbolises that Jotaro’s
main goal and focus is on the main antagonist and that it is his goal to take him down due to
the importance and intensity of the destruction that DIO will cause. Whereas if we look at
DIO’s character in this cover, we can see that his focus is on his fist and not the main
protagonist. This represents DIO’s concentration on his power and not anything around him.
He merely just wants to become more powerful and anything that stands in his way, as in
the main protagonist, is nothing and just another pesky obstacle in DIO’s master plan.
In conclusion, Hirohiko Araki makes good use of showing the difference between two
characters and highlighting their goals through simple imagery of each character. Overall

5
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

this is a very eye-catching piece and in my opinion, portrays the message it needs to in the
best way possible.

Moving on to the fourth example, I have chosen to

dissect the manga cover of “Kuroko no Basuke” or
more commonly known to the English audiences,
“The Basketball in which Kuroko Plays”. This manga
is written by the popular Japanese mangaka,
Tadatoshi Fujimaki, who is most loved when writing
sports manga such as Kuroko no Basuke. The main
genre for this manga is as I mentioned before,
Sports, but it can fall into the Comedy genre also.
From what we can tell by the first sight of this image
is the many people that are included in it and with
the positioning and sizes of the various characters
we can get a message of the importance of certain
characters compared to others. Starting with the
two characters at the front of the image, these are
the two main characters within the series, both Taiga Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko, of which
they appear to be holding a basketball. This represents the bond that these two best friends
have that started through basketball, of which the mangaka is trying to portray through
them both holding it in joint unison. Moving on to the other characters, the ones in
placement all behind the main two characters are all rivals to the main characters, as we can
see from the different jerseys that they wear. The more recurring and overbearing
characters are larger than the others, hence the large dark-haired male behind our
protagonists and the other large blonde-haired character to the bottom left of the
characters. These represent the importance of each of the characters, which the mangaka
portrays very well in this this manga cover. What we can also see that catches our eyes, is
the plethora of colours that are used in this image, most of which are the different hair
colours of each of the characters. This is used to represent the individuality of each of the
characters, as from what we learn in the main story, each of the characters have a certain
power that they can use when playing basketball. From this image also, we can tell that
6
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

there is a very intense and competitive atmosphere, of which is an exact representation of

the manga itself.
For my fifth example, I will be deconstructing and
reporting about a volume cover for the manga, “One
Punch Man” written by a man of the user name “One”
and illustrated by an artist called, “Yusuke Murata”. The
genres that would best represent One Punch Man
would be Comedy. Action and Superheroes. The image
to the right is from a story arc further on in the story,
and thus it has characters that have not really been
introduced before on this cover, plus the protagonist
hidden in the background. In this arc, the focus is on
the character, “Metal Bat”, as shown at the most
forefront of the volume cover, with a smaller arc
occurring within with the main character of the series
overall hidden to the far left of the cover. The only
character left in this image is Metal Bat’s younger sister
of which I will elaborate on further in the upcoming points. This art style is very modern in
the current Japanese manga industry, thus making One Punch Man a high selling comic in
that part of the world. This image makes good use of a monotone colour scheme with hints
of neo noir through it, with the main image being drawn in black and the bold red “One
Punch Man” contrasting it at the top of the cover. Moving onto the message in this image,
the main character as mentioned above in this arc is Metal Bat. This is shown in the image
as he is at the front of the image, making the viewer know that the main story will have him
as a large part in it. We can also see that he gets into many fights and trouble with his rough
look and ripped shirt, but with a very childish nature as he has a very non-aggressive look on
his face. This could also put across the message that he has a much gentler side due to his
younger sister holding onto him on the right, even though he might get into many fights and
be in danger, when his younger sister is around he is much calmer and much more
protective over her to keep her safe. My final point on the messages portrayed in this
volume cover would be the main character off to the left of the image. The way he looks in
this cover is in correlation to his current look within the source material, in which he is
7
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

wearing a disguise (the wig) and is looking at a flyer for an upcoming superhero tournament,
of which he will attend.
For my sixth and final example, I’ll be
explaining and highlighting key points from a
manga cover of the very popular “Gantz”
written by Hiroya Oku in 2000 and ending in
2003. The genres in which Gantz can fall under
being is Action, Science Fiction, Horror and
Thriller as it is a quite weird and vast world it is
set in. This is the first volume cover that was
created for the series, and so it is the setting
stone for the style, tone and development for
all the future volumes that would then proceed
to be released after. Starting off, we can first
tell that this has a neo noir theme to it, in that
it is mostly black and white but with large
bursts of red to make it pop out and catch the
viewer’s eye very well. The large letter ‘G’ in the middle is a recurring theme in the future
volumes also as it represents the ‘G’ in Gantz and also how important Gantz is, as it is a main
character in the series and is evident to the viewer straight off the bat. It also looks like it is
written in blood, as gore is one of the most important feature of this series of which it has a
lot of. This blood written ‘G’ can also represent the amount of death that occurs within the
series, as due to Gantz many people die in very horrible ways if they do not play the “game”
right. Moving along, we are drawn to the six characters that are drawn at the top of the
volume cover. These are the first 6 characters that we are introduced to that are trapped
within Gantz. The main character, Kei Kurono, stands at the front in his full Gantz uniform,
which is a foreshadowing in comparison to the other characters around him as they are not
in uniform, portraying that they don’t stay alive for as long as the main character. The
atmosphere within this image is also very tense. All the characters are seemingly fighting for
their lives as shown them with guns and shouting intensely. The large black void below them
also portrays how darkness is closing in on our characters and how it’s unavoidable as there
is so much of it. In conclusion, I feel like Hiroya Oku done amazingly in portraying many
8
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

things in such a small space and creating a tense atmosphere around his characters.

Task B
In this task, I am being asked to research and present examples of six manga authors work
from a range of manga genres that inspires me and provide copies of their works. I will also
be taking a couple of my examples from the above task as I find their work very inspiring.

Example No. 1 – Hirohiko Araki

My first example for manga authors work that inspire me, would be from the mangaka
“Hirohiko Araki”. Araki’s work is something that I have been inspired by for almost 5 years
now, with his works being my favourite of all time. The way in which he presents his art and
tells his stories have always inspired me. How he can make and build all sorts of characters
and allow you to relate to them on a deep level is something that has always intrigued me
and made me appreciate his work more and more over the years. Hirohiko Araki started off
as a small time mangaka in 1980 with his first works being on the two action manga named
“Baoh” and “Gorgeous Irene”. These were the first attempts that Araki really jumped into
the world of being a manga author with. He then started on the series, “JoJo’s Bizarre
Adventure” in 1987, of which is still going to the present day. This is his most popular work
and is one of the biggest manga and animations in the world today. His works have been a
big factor in the way I view things as a person now as his writing and storytelling delve into
certain topics that the average American television show would never go near. Araki’s work
opens a whole new world of opportunities in the way of thinking and interaction. Due to the
above points, I have
chosen
Hirohiko Araki as
one of my main
inspirations in this
field of work. I will now
proceed to give
examples of his
work from over the
years.

Example No. 2 – Hiroya Oku

I have been inspired by Hiroya Oku’s work for roughly two years since I first discovered his
most popular manga, ‘Gantz’. The way in which he draws his characters, develops his
plotlines and the general capturing of Japan has always garnered my interest within his
work. Gantz is one of the most popular manga in both the Japanese population and the
Western population (i.e. America, Europe etc.). His earliest works date back to 1988 where
he first developed and created his first manga, “Hen”. He then went on to create the series
“Gantz”, which as mentioned above, is extremely popular. After he finished Gantz, Oku then
moved on to creating the manga, “Inuyashiki”. As a huge fan of both Gantz and Inuyashiki, I
can say that Hiroya Oku is one of my biggest inspirations within this line of work.

Example No. 3 – Kohei Horikoshi

One of my biggest inspirations and admirations in recent memory has come from the
manga, “Boku no Hero Academia” written and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi. The main
reason this has inspired me is how Kohei illustrates and develops his story with his
characters. The main character in this series is Izuku Midoriya. He was born without a super
power in a world full of those with powers, and thus was an outcast to society. Why this has
inspired me is due to the development that Midoriya goes through in that he learns to deal
with what he has and to not let it bring him down. He goes on to make many friends and
develops into an admirable person to those around him. What draws me in so much about
his drawings is the expressions and character designs that he can portray with even some of
the simplest of characters. Here are some examples of Horikoshi’s work in his manga Boku
no Hero Academia.

Example No. 4 – Hideo Yamamoto

Hideo Yamamoto’s work first caught my eye with his manga, “Homunculus” of which dived
into some serious topics in regards to expanding the brain to its full potential. I’ve always
found topics like this extremely interesting and added with the amazing drawings that Hideo
Yamamoto accompanies with his literature really gives a full experience and a large dive into
the minds of some of the craziest characters in manga. His work has inspired me due to
these reasons, and thus I have chosen him to elaborate on in this section of my report. The
following images are from the manga mentioned above, Homunculus, which was released in
2003 and ended in 2011.

Example No. 5 – Junji Ito

Junji Ito is no doubt one of the biggest inspirations within this medium. He is most famous
for his manga all about horror, of which in the community he is claimed as the “King” of
Japanese Horror. His most notable work, and also the one who lead me to discover him,
would be “Uzumaki”. This manga is based all around “Spirals” that in a sense, everything
that has ever existed will eventually form into a spiral. This horror manga has had a movie
spin off made as it was so terrifying to the Japanese audience. Junji Ito’s work is extremely
detailed and well thought out. One of my biggest admirations for his work comes from his
sense of shock factor. He can make just simply turning a page of a book seem suspenseful to
you as you have no idea what lays ahead, which is truly terrifying. The character designs are
another thing that has also drawn me to him, where he lacks in making his protagonists
amazing, he makes up for in making the horrific monsters absolutely terrifying in all the
right ways. Below, I will go through some of his most popular examples of work.

Example No. 6 – Akira Hiramoto

For my final inspiration for this task, I have chosen the famous mangaka Akira Hiramoto. His
work on his most popular manga, “Prison School” is what drew me to discovering him. He
has not done any other manga in his lifetime as he is still a young artist. Prison School is a
comedy manga based around five high school boys in an all-girls school. The boys get into
many troubling mishaps daily and just want to live in harmony with the seemingly stuck up
girls. The reason why I chose this mangaka is because his art is spectacular. With both his
character designs and his backgrounds, it serves for great storytelling. Below are a few
examples of his work from Prison School.

Task C, D & E
I have decided to re-create a Manga Covers from the series,
“JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”, more specifically Part 7, “Steel Ball
Run”. My initial idea from this came from how much I adore
the series as a whole, as I have mentioned above. How I first
started this image, was looked into some of the Manga covers
that really stood out to me. The first image I decided to re-
create is this image on the right. I first started out by getting
the outfit. I already had this outfit in a different colour scheme,
as the series tends to switch up the colour scheme for certain
art, so I decided that I would model for the image myself. I
then asked a partner to help me set up the shoot. We set up a
green screen and my
partner had their own DSLR
Camera, of which they used
to take the images. I done my own hair and makeup for
the shoot and made sure everything was good to go
before we started this shoot. The location in which we
chose to shoot in was the TV Studio in the North West
Regional College as it was the most reliable and easily
accessed place that we could re-create these images.
The second image I decided to re-create was this image
to the left. For my third image, I decided to cross
between two separate mediums from the same
category. I created an image doing the same pose as a
character from, “Yuri!! On Ice” but re-creating it in the
same costume as the character from above. I would have done a third image exactly as a
similar manga cover, but due to circumstances I had to stick to the contingency plan and re-
create this idea instead. All of my re-created images can be seen on the next page.

Lens Based Recording Techniques in Art & Design

Assignment 2

PORTFOLIO OF EVIDENCE

NAME: Daniella Vincent

Learning outcomes

LO1 Understand the purpose of lens-based recording techniques

(Recording: light; colour; texture; contrast; scale; shape; objects)

(Aims: convey meaning; moods; express ideas; highlight creative intentions;

build visual library; create records e.g. objects, environments, events,
change over time, performance, installation, ephemera, land-art)

(Purpose: researching e.g. visual sources, material, subjects, environments;

documenting e.g. work in progress, final outcomes, portfolio, stages,
developmental cycle; building library e.g. visuals imagery, starting points;
providing evidence e.g. for self, assessors, client, agent).

1.1 Evaluate the potential for creating images

When thinking about my skills, I would never say I am the best at what I do, but I do try my
hardest. With the images I will have created for this assignment, I believe will show my
current abilities off but I hope to greatly improve in the future as this is the career path I aim
to head down. The potential for creating images that fit my theme is high in my opinion. I
aim to do what I feel is best within my work, and hopefully with guidance from those
34
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

around me and inspiration from other artists within the mediums I like, I can only hope that
the potential to make a good end product is very high. I will use skills that I have learned
and used of the past few years within media creation to aid me in completing this
assignment. I hope to use various techniques with dark lighting, contrasting colours, various
shapes and objects to create images and also create various scales of imagery for my
portfolio.

1.2 Clarify purposes for creating images

The main purpose I feel in creating image for my theme, is to portray myself through my
pieces. As the theme for my project that I feel sticks out the most to me is Adventure. Not
just adventure within travelling and fictional worlds, but within my life. Adventure to me is
my journey through my life and all the various stages with all the various things I see and
experience. Continuing from his point, this is why I wanted to choose this as my Project as I
feel I can be interested the most in this. I also want to convey meaning towards my love for
other things in my life, such as Graphics Design and Comic books. Thus, I have taken
inspiration from other artists and combined them into something unique to what I love. The
moods I want to portray within my project is the happiness within the simplest of things and
also the love & passion for things in life. My creative intentions I hope to include these
works within the website I am building for my Web Design unit and also for future projects
that I work on. Using both work I have done in the past and work I will do in the future, I
hope to build a library of images to edit and redesign for this project.

LO1 Research
Within the research that I will carry out below, I will represent artists that inspire me and
that I will take pieces of inspiration to interpret into my own imagery for this project.

35
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Milton Glaser - American Graphic Designer

Milton Glaser is among the most celebrated graphic designers in the United States. He has
created the pieces that you see below. His work has inspired me due to the simplicity of his
work, yet it holds a powerful message behind it. Gasler’s work has always been one of my
inspirations within this medium as it really stands out when I see it. His use of bright colours
when using black has always been something I like seeing within art, and due to his style, I
will take Milton Glaser’s work as an inspiration when carrying out my own work.

36
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Ansel Adams – Landscape Photographer

Another person of interest that I found in my research is Ansel Adams. He is an olden day
photographer who specialised in landscapes. His work caught my eye as it has this stand out
feel to it. The way his work looks, in my opinions, is this sketchy, slightly manga-ish style to
it. As seen in some of his work below, it has a very grimy feel to it which reminded me of my
love for the art in Japanese manga. Due to this, I will be taking inspiration from Ansel’s work
and incorporating it into my own.

37
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Kohei Horikoshi – Japanese Manga Artist

As mentioned in my previous assignment, Kohei Horikoshi is a big inspiration to things I do.
He is a Japanese Manga artist, who is most famous for his series “My Hero Academia”. His
work is one of my main inspirations at the current moment, as his art is extremely
aesthetically pleasing to me. His work is so simple at times, yet can be extremely detailed
the next. Expanding from the previous points, my work will be somewhat inspired by Kohei’s
work further down the line.

38
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

David Brookover – Photographer

Much like Ansel Adams, David Brookover is skilled in capturing beauty and forming imagery
through his lens before hand-crafting the image into an exceptional print. Brookover tends
to take a lot of landscape, wildlife and abstract images. This is what drew me to him, as in
relation to my project, “Adventure”, I too see myself using pictures of various things around
me as they make me who I am. Brookover’s work is definitely one of my main inspirations in
accordance to my assignment.

LO2 Be able to use lens-based

2.1 Identify materials for lens-based image making
(Cameras and accessories: 35 mm SLR; digital SLR, compact; automatic
phone camera; digital video; webcam).

35 mm SLR: A 35 mm SLR camera is probably the most popular type among people who are
interested in taking more than just "snapshots" from their phone or a similar device. A 35
mm is a so-called "point-and-shoot" or an APS (Advanced Photo System) camera. The "35
millimetre" refers to the width of the film within the camera. Below is an image of what a
35mm SLR camera looks like:

Digital SLR: A DSLR camera is a digital single-lens reflex camera. What this means is inside
the camera’s body is a mirror that reflects the light
coming from the lens and sends it through a prism
(in higher-end DSLRs) or a series of mirrors (usually
in lower-end models) and finally to the optical
viewfinder. This is how you can see what you’re
shooting, right through the lens. The image to the
right is what a standard DSLR camera looks like:

Compact Camera: Compact System Cameras are designed for those who are seeking a
camera that offers lots of creative control, high image quality and the option to attach
different lenses, but who don’t usually want the bulk of a DSLR. Some are almost as big as a
DSLR but offer a different user experience, due to the camera’s shape and design. Some use
a smaller sensor, while we’re also increasingly seeing great feats of design where the sensor
is large, but the body remains small. Many Compact Cameras have viewfinders, but some
offer just an LCD screen, which can make them more difficult to use in bright sun. Below, is
an image of a typical Compact Camera:

Camera Phone: A camera phone is a mobile phone that can take pictures and record video
clips. The pictures and clips from the camera phone can then be transferred to and stored in
a computer, shared with other mobile devices and so on. Most new mobile phones are
already equipped with cameras of varying levels of quality. The best Camera phones in the
market currently would be the Apple iPhones due to how high of quality they are. Below, is
an example of the cameras within mobile phones:

Digital Video Camera: A digital video camera is a device that records video to formats
including Digital8, MiniDV, DVD, a hard drive, or solid-state flash memory. Some digital
camcorders also have the capability of taking still pictures and storing on separate media,
typically the same type as used in digital cameras. While the image quality may not be quite
as good as a standard digital camera, this allowed users to carry just one device to record
both video and still images. In the picture below, is an example of a digital camcorder:

Webcam: A webcam is a digital camera that’s connected to a computer. It can send live
pictures from wherever it’s sited to another location by means of the internet. Many
desktop computer screens and laptops come with a built-in camera and microphone
nowadays, but years ago you would normally have to buy them both separately. Webcams
aren’t the best quality recording equipment in modern times. Here is an image of a
webcam:

LO3 Be able to apply visual language in lens-based work

3.1 Explore formal elements through the use of photographic techniques
(Considerations: composition; aesthetics; proximity; viewpoint; factual; clarity
(Use of formal elements: form; line; perspective; textures; movement; volume; scale; colour;
shape; contrast; pattern; rhythm; repeat; angle).

Considerations

Composition
When creating the images for my project, I used many different angles to set up different
compositions for each photography piece as each on required its own unique composition
altogether. I believe that I chose the right compositions for most of my pieces, as I
mentioned earlier, I am still improving on my skills thus I believe some of them could have
had a better composition set up.

Aesthetics
The aesthetics of each of my pieces are somewhat unique to each one again. For the
photography aspect, I wanted to give a grimmer and grey feel to some of them with
contrasting blues and dark colours to make it aesthetic to those aspects. However, with
some of the other photography pieces I went for a more vibrant route to give it a brighter
aesthetically pleasing feel. Then with my graphics design pieces, the aesthetics for those is
to create minimalist effects that are aesthetic to most people.

Proximity
With my pieces, I made sure the proximity was accurate by making sure everything was in
frame when taking the images. This ensured that I could get the best effect through my
pieces as much as I possibly could.

Viewpoint
The viewpoints on my pieces are mixed. Most of them are from a first-person viewpoint
whilst some of them are a third person viewpoint. Angles wise, I used mostly the same angle
as I love how images turn out when taken from a bit further down from the subject.
45
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Clarity
Some of my work could have been in higher quality and certain features clarified much
better than how they originally are, but due to how my skills are at the moment, I believe
that I made good use of my existing skills to build a nice portfolio.

Terms
Form
Form is a way of using elements of art, principles of design, and media. Element of art that is
three-dimensional and encloses space. Like a shape, a form has length and width, but it also
has depth. Forms are either geometric or free-form.

Line
A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It is one-dimensional and
can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of a form. Lines can be
horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin.

Perspective
Perspective in art is the technique used to represent three-dimensional objects on a two-
dimensional platform in a way that looks natural and realistic. Perspective is used to create
an illusion of space and depth on a flat surface. Perspective most commonly refers to linear
perspective, the optical illusion using converging lines and vanishing points, which makes
objects appear smaller the further they are from the viewer.

Textures
Texture is the perceived surface quality of a work of art. It is an element of two-dimensional
and three-dimensional designs and is distinguished by its perceived visual and physical
properties. Use of texture, along with other elements of design, can convey a variety of
messages and emotions.

46
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Movement
Movement is used to guide the viewer through the piece. Lines, shapes, colour, depth and
hierarchy can all be used to guide the viewer from one point to the next – at a glance. Visual
movement is more commonly known in the graphic design world as 'flow'.

Scale
Scale is the dimensional element defined by other elements of design size relative to art, its
surroundings, or in relation to humans. Scale is the size of an element as it relates to its
usual physical size.

Colour
Within Visual art, artists choose colours to produce a certain mood or atmosphere; to create
space, light, and shadow; or to introduce symbolic associations.

Shape
In visual arts, shape is a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines, textures,
colours or an area enclosed by other shapes for example triangles circles and squares.

Contrast
Contrast is simply defined as difference. Difference between art elements like colour, value,
size, texture, and so on can intensify the elements used. As a result, the elements used in a
work of art can become more powerful. Although contrast is closely related with variety, it
is usually considered a principle of art.

Pattern
Pattern is an underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent,
regular manner. Pattern can be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, but it can
also be thought of as the "skeleton" that organizes the parts of a composition.

47
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Rhythm
Repetition refers to one object or shape repeated; pattern is a combination of elements or
shapes repeated in a recurring and regular arrangement; rhythm--is a combination of
elements repeated, but with variations.

Repeat
As mentioned in the description above, Repetition refers to one object or shape that is
repeated within a visual piece.

3.2 Apply creative considerations when selecting photographic techniques

Light sources: natural e.g. available; artificial e.g. controlled, portable, interior;
studio set-up
Techniques and effects: exposure e.g. controlled, multiple, bracketed;
lighting e.g. studio, natural; viewpoint e.g. anticipated, unexpected;
mode e.g. factual recording, intention, capturing moment).

Within my work, my creative considerations were to try and use as many techniques I could
within photography. I tried images with natural lighting which turned out good and I also
used flash photography lighting as it was the only thing available to me at that moment in
time. A lot of my pieces were capturing the moment, as I was the Adventures that I was
experiencing at that moment in time, thus making a lot of my pieces something that brings
back memories and portrays the happiest points of my life. A lot of what I will be
photographing will not be in a controlled environment, thus leading me to have to decide
the best moment in which to take the picture. In contrast to that, the illustration side of my
project will be in a controlled environment as it is completely up to me to build an
illustration from scratch. What I hope to achieve with my work is to make the viewer take a
peek into some of the better aspects of my life and see what’s truly memorable to me/see
what means a lot to me. I will be mainly focusing on Photography and Illustration for this
project. After trying out animation, I seen that it would not suit my project and project it in
the best light, thus I have decided not to take that route. Hope fully in the future I can build
on my other skills and be confident to try many various ways and techniques within Lens
Based Media.

LO4 Be able to produce lens-based

4.1 Investigate the potential of different image production techniques work
(Silver-based dev eloping and printing: processing e.g. black and white film,
colour film, prints; laboratory work e.g. transparencies; paper quality;
image quality e.g. contrast, colour values).

When researching and trying to discover a paper quality for my work, I would choose the
highest quality. I believe that this would be the correct route to go down. When researching
this section, I found that the best paper for high quality prints, that most photographers
use, would be Glossy Photo Paper. The high-resolution inkjet receiving coatings on these
papers would allow me to achieve professional standard photographs by printing them on
an inkjet printer. For my illustrations however, I would choose to use Professional
photogenic photo paper as it is high quality and has long lasting results and value. Even the
most basic printer can use this paper, and given the amount of illustrations I produce for
this project and outside of this project, this would be a good solution if I would like to print
my work at home.

4.2 Produce lens-based outcomes defined by creative intention.

(Digital image manipulation: cropping; enlarging; reducing; adjusting e.g. levels, hue,
saturation, channels, balance; distorting e.g. manipulating, fading,
Outcomes: prints e.g. contacts, end prints, enlargements, experimental, documentary).

Below, I will walk through how I created the images and the different techniques I used to
achieve the final product.

Image 1: This picture is one that I took from my Apple iPod Touch’s camera. I took this
image during one of the good few times I visited New York. As I knew I had this project
coming up, I have gathered images from various travels to add into this assignment. The
editing to this image was quite simple as I cropped it and used a filter to make it look a bit
49
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

more “comic-book” style in the slightest, as it is an image of one of the places I love the
most with a hint of one of my hobbies thrown in. I also adjusted the contrast on his image as
well to make the buildings and the sky stand out from each other.

Image 2: In the same situation as above, I took this picture during my travels to New York
also, as where I was staying had a forest on the outside of it. I changed the contrast on this
image and gave it a filter to make it look very dreary and cold to portray a sense of coldness
to the viewer.

Image 3: This is an image I took in Ireland of a “Wartwell” inside a forest. I adjusted the
contrast on this image to make the green stand out and I also added the same filter as
above but with higher settings to give it a “comic book” feel to it.

Image 4: Again, another picture from my travels to New York. I manipulated this image in
the same style as Image 1 and focused heavily on contrasted the red from the rest of the
image.

Image 5: This is an image I took from somewhere close to home, as it is a picture of some
shredded wood on the ground. I added the filter mentioned above to give it a very grainy
feel to it.

Image 6: This is another picture taken in Ireland of the same place within the forest
mentioned above. I wanted this image to give of a dark feeling thus I adjusted the
brightness and contrast in Photoshop accordingly.

Image 7: Another picture from my travels to New York. I manipulated this image in the
same style as Image 1 and focused heavily on contrasted the blue from the rest of the
image. Also have that same filter on it to make the water pop out and also to make the
image more three-dimensional.

50
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

Image 8: Once more, another picture from my travels to New York. I manipulated this image
in the same style as Image 1 and focused on making it look green and wet to make the
features already existing in the image, stand out.

Image 9: An image from New York once more, but I took this image to show to contrast
between dark and light, as it inspired me. I didn’t adjust this image too much, I only adjusted
the contrast slightly and applied the filter mentions above to give it a slightly grainy feel.

Image 10: This is an image I took at an art gallery in Derry, I thought that the paper planes
contrasted the blue background really well, thus took a picture of it. With this image, I
mainly just adjusted the contrast on it to make the colours pop out more.

Image 11: This is another image I took of New York at the 9/11 memorial site. I mainly took
this image as it was a beautiful and sorrowful place to be, thus I tried to portray that in the
editing by making the blue, grey and whites stand out more.

Image 12: This is an image taken at the same forest location I mentioned above. I love how
grim this forest was, and this window was very aesthetically pleasing to me. I didn’t do
much editing to this other than the contrast and cropping it.

Image 13: Moving on to my illustration side of things, this image is inspired from the manga
mentioned above, “My Hero Academia”. By drawing this character in Adobe Illustrator, I
sought the inspiration from the artist I research that inspired me and made this piece a two-
toned outline piece.

Image 14: The next image is a minimalist graphics design piece of myself on one of my
favourite events I have been to. I made this to pay homage to both the artists that inspire
me and the event that took place.

Image 15: Piece is a two -toned inspired piece that involves my dog. I took a high-quality
picture of him within the weekly tasks I carried out, but this image stood out to me. I

51
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

applied a filter to this to make it into a two-tone piece and added a blue background as it
contrasts the black well.

Image 16: In the same inspiration as image 13, I made this one into a poster. I used Adobe
Illustrator and re-created my favourite character from a side view.

Image 17: This was a practice piece of minimalist art I done of my friend. I decided to
include this as it shows my progression with the minimalist art.

Image 18: This was also a practice piece of minimalist art I done of my friend. I decided to
include this as it shows my progression with the minimalist art.

Conclusion
To summarise, I believe I did exceptionally well taking on this project. In the future I would
probably try to use a more varied amount of skills, but as mentioned above I want to
improve my skills to another level before having confidence in those techniques. Below, I
will go through the various learning outcomes and evaluate my progress and development
within each one.

LO1: Understand the purpose of lens based recording techniques

In this learning outcome, I believe I have a wide understanding of lens based recording
techniques, developed a good understanding of evaluating the potential for creating images
and also, I clarified the purposes for creating the images in my portfolio. I have also
researched various artists from different fields to gather a wide range of knowledge of
different techniques I could use within my assignment.

LO2: Be able to use lens-based equipment

In this learning outcome, I believe I have a good understanding in being able to use lens
based equipment whilst working on various sections of my portfolio. I was able to identify
materials for lens-based image making and also, I used lens-based equipment for required
purposes.

52
Unit 104 Daniella Vincent

LO3: Be able to apply visual language in lens-based work

Within this learning outcome, I believe that within my images I was able to apply various
visual languages. I also comprehensively explored formal element through the use of
photographic techniques and was able to apply my creative considerations when selecting
photographic techniques.

LO4: Be able to produce lens-based work

In the final learning outcome, I have been able to produce all 18 pieces of my project and
investigated the potential of different image production techniques. And finally, I have also
produced lens-based outcomes defined by creative intentions.
