Describes an Analysis of Text Mining Data and Provides Insight to How the Analysis Informs the
Business

For this particular problem a corpus or repository of data was created on the topic of the use of

data analytics in quality assurance. This was accomplished by searching the university library and

downloading the subject matter pertinent to this investigation, a file called the corpus compilation was

created to hold this information.

The file was then imported into Tool Wire and saved and then imported into SAS Enterprise

Miner. A diagram, library and data source were created. From the Text Import node a Data Partition, Text

Parsing and Text Filter nodes were connected and an analysis performed, results can be seen below.

The following excerpt was taken from the Vila Health interview with Rick Susskind, Data Analytics Mentor

for Vila Health and provides analysis of how it informs the business.

“Now, the whole Vila Health system is starting to use analytics for more kinds of problems, and

it’s occurred to them that the library should have a section about the use of analytics. But that’s a broad

topic, and the library's corporate owners want to start with the most useful content. Quality assurance is

critical at any hospital or system of hospitals, so they want to add a new section specifically about the use

of analytics in quality assurance efforts.

But of course, health records contain a lot more than structured data. A doctor’s notes over

several visits, nurses’ notes, care coordination notes — that’s unstructured data. And it can be just as

valuable, if not more, in improving quality of care. The challenge, of course, is to get it into an analyzable

form. Text mining to the rescue!

So, for example, Vila Health already analyzes structured data to figure out what factors might

help predict heart attacks. But those are the factors that they already know to ask about, right? It’s pretty

common knowledge that if you analyze patients' cholesterol numbers or blood pressure numbers, you're

going to find that those numbers can help to predict heart attacks. But what about the factors we don't

know about? Ridiculous example, but you get the idea. The difficulty of analyzing that unstructured data is

outweighed by its potential value in identifying patterns that would never occur to us otherwise”

Insight to How the Data Influences the Business Solution

Text mining is the investigation of information contained in normal dialect content. The use of

content mining methods to take care of business issues is called content investigation or text analytics.

“Text mining can help an organization derive potentially valuable business insights from text-

based content such as word documents, email and postings on social media streams like Facebook,

Twitter and LinkedIn. Mining unstructured data with natural language processing (NLP), statistical

modeling and machine learning techniques can be challenging, however, because natural language text

is often inconsistent. It contains ambiguities caused by inconsistent syntax and semantics, including

slang, language specific to vertical industries and age groups, double entendres and sarcasm.

Text analytics software can help by transposing words and phrases in unstructured data into

numerical values which can then be linked with structured data in a database and analyzed with

traditional data mining techniques. With an iterative approach, an organization can successfully use text

analytics to gain insight into content-specific values such as sentiment, emotion, intensity and relevance.

Because text analytics technology is still considered to be an emerging technology, however, results and

depth of analysis can vary wildly from vendor to vendor” (searchbusinessanalytics, 2017).
