You are going to read an article about two sisters.
For questions 6-12, decide if each sentence is TRUE or FALSE.

The world of tennis has never seen two sisters like Venus and Serena before. Venus has
already won Wimbledon three times and the US Open twice, though she hasn't won the
Australian or French Open yet. Serena, has won many grand slam titles including some
against her sister.
The two sisters have come a long way from the poor area in California where they were
born. It was full of violence and drugs,' and the girls' father, Richard, wanted to move to a
safer place. They moved in 1991 and they have never looked back. Richard started to train
Venus when she was four and says, ‘The first time I took Venus to the tennis court, I told
my wife, “She hasn't won anything yet but I think we have a champion.”’
Venus played in her first big tournament in 1996 and dominated US women's tennis in
2000 and 2001. After her defeat in the US Open in 2001, Serena said, 'I'm disappointed
but only a little because Venus won.' But that was the last time Venus beat her younger
sister. Serena is now a more aggressive player and has the will to win. After the 2002
Wimbledon final against Venus she said, 'I wanted to win so badly. I kept thinking to
myself, "Serena, just stay calm. She has already won two Wimbledons. You have beaten
her before. Try to fight."· In 2003, Wimbledon watched the two sisters playing the final
again and Serena defended her title successfully.
Has tennis ever caused problems between the sisters? 'We've played each other many
times,' says Venus, 'and it hasn't worried us yet!' 'We don't even talk about tennis off the
court; says Serena.
Serena lost her position as world number one in 2004 but she made a comeback in
February 2005 and won her second Australian title. In June 2005, Venus won Wimbledon
for the third time.

PART 3
Read the following text.
For questions 13-17, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) according to the text.

“My baby has been missing for over a month now, and I want him back so badly,” says
Mrs. Brown, a 56-year-old woman who lives by herself in a trailer park near Clovis. Clyde,
her 7-year-old cat, didn’t come home for dinner more than a month ago. The next morning
he didn’t appear for breakfast either. After Clyde missed an extra-special lunch, she called
the police.
When the policeman asked her to describe Clyde, she told him that Clyde had beautiful
green eyes, had all his teeth but was missing half of his left ear, and was seven years old
and completely white. She then told the officer that Clyde was about a foot high. “Is Clyde
your child or your pet?” the officer suspiciously asked. “Well, he’s my cat, of course,” Mrs.
Brown replied. “Lady, you’re supposed to report missing PERSONS, not missing CATS,”
said the irritated policeman. “Well, who can I report this to?” she asked. “You can’t. You
have to ask around your neighborhood or put up flyers,” replied the officer.
Mrs. Brown figured that a billboard would work a lot better than an 8”x11” piece of paper
on a telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end of her street just off the
interstate highway. She called the phone number on the billboard, and they told her they
could blow up a picture of Clyde (from Mrs. Brown’s family album) and put it on the
billboard for all to see.
“But how can people see it when they whiz by on the interstate?” she asked. “Oh, don’t
worry, ma’am, they only whiz by between 2 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. The rest of the day, the
interstate is so full of commuters that no one moves.” They told her it would cost only
$3,000 a month. So she took most of the money out of her savings account and rented the
billboard for a month.
The month has passed, but Clyde has not appeared. Because she has almost no money
in savings, Mrs. Brown called the local newspaper to see if anyone could help her rent the
billboard for just one more month. She is waiting but, so far, no one has stepped forward.

PART 4
Read the text and answer questions 18-25.

Birthday Traditions Around the World

The tradition of birthday parties started a long time ago. People thought that there was a
special danger from evil spirits, so friends and family came together to bring good thoughts
and wishes and even presents. At one time, only kings had birthday parties but as time
went by, children and then adults began to have their own birthday celebrations. There are
some traditions such as sending birthday cards, blowing out the candles on a birthday
cake and singing the 'Happy Birthday' song, that you can find almost anywhere, any time.
Others are more specific to certain ages and certain countries.
In China, everyone celebrates their birthday on New Year's Day: they become one year
older on that day. On a child's second birthday, family members put a variety of objects on
the door around the child. According to Chinese tradition, the first object that the child
picks up tells you what profession the child will choose later in life.
For Japanese children, the third, fifth and seventh birthdays are particularly important. At
this age, there is a special celebration called Shichi-Go-San (seven, five, three) in
Japanese) when children go to the temple wearing a brand-new kimono. The priest gives
them special sweets, and the parents usually organise a party for their friends in their
home.
In Argentina, Mexico and several other Latin American countries, girls have a special
birthday celebration when they reach the age of fifteen. After a religious ceremony, the
girls dance a waltz with their father and other boys.
Eighteen is the traditional 'coming of age' - the age where you have the right to vote, join
the armed forces and (in many countries), drink alcohol and (in the UK) buy a house or
become a member of parliament!
In many English-speaking countries, a twenty-first birthday cake often has a key on top, or
the cake itself is sometimes in the shape of a key. The key means that the young person is
now old enough to leave and enter the family home at any time they want to.
In the past in parts of Europe, men who reached the age of thirty and were still single had
to clean the stairs of the City Hall. This way every girl could see that the man didn't have a
girlfriend - and how good he was at cleaning the house!
After the age of thirty, many people prefer to forget their birthdays rather than celebrate
them. Children often bring Mum (or Dad) breakfast in bed, and it's traditional to give a
bunch of flowers and enjoy a special meal or party. It's also a day when your friends and
family have to pay if you go out for drinks or a meal!

PART 5
Read the following text.
For questions 26-30, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) according to the text.

Go into a coffee bar, sit down, relax and try to talk to someone. It may look to others as
though you are wasting your time. It may even feel that way to you. But so long as you are
doing this in a foreign country, where you speak the language badly or not at all, you are
probably acquiring a new language better than you ever could by formal study with a
teacher and a textbook.
The social situation, properly used, beats the classroom hollow. It is full of native speakers
asking you questions, telling you to do things, urging you to take an active part in
conversation, and using gestures freely lo make their intentions clearer — just like your
parents did when you were an infant. So plunge in. All you have to do is talk back.
The proposition that infants can acquire languages by prolonged exposure to them is sell-
evidently true: it is the only way available to them. Older children and teenagers who move
to a different country can pick up a new language with a speed that baffles their parents.
But in adulthood we find ourselves envying our rare contemporaries who can still acquire
languages easily.
There may be biological reasons why the capacity to learn languages falls away with age,
even more than the capacity to learn other things. The brain may be designed to do its
best language-learning in infancy, and then to redeploy its resources at puberty. But
psychological factors play a big part too. As we get older, we get more self-conscious,
more inhibited, more dependent on other people's judgements. This process may
undermine our capacity to acquire a new language, because language underpins our
sense of personality and identity. We fear to make mistakes in it.
Stepen Krashen, an expert on second-language acquisition, makes a strong case for the
dominance of psychological factors. According to Mr Krashen, people with outgoing
personalities do best at learning a new language because 'they have the ego to make the
necessary mistakes involved in learning'.
When we want to learn a new language in mid-life for reasons of career or curiosity, we
commonly but wrongly tackle it with the sense of doing something difficult and unnatural.
We turn to grammar books and compact discs expecting a fight. We are going lo 'struggle'
with the language. We will 'master' it, unless it defeats us. And with that sort of attitude, it
probably will.
All other things being equal, the best learner will be the person who is the most relaxed in
conversation, and the most self-confident.

Page 15 2017
Q26. The text is about …
A) places where a foreign language can be learned
B) resources that can be used for learning a foreign language
C) factors that influence learning a foreign language
D) methods that help learn a foreign language effectively

Q27. For adult language learners, an informal setting is better than being in a
classroom situation because they …
A) “dive” into the language atmosphere
B) see gestures of people speaking
C) remember the times they were kids
D) feel more comfortable than in a classroom

Q28. It is obviously the case that children learn language as a result of …

A) making mistakes in front of others
B) worrying about the opinion of others
C) not having a sense of identity
D) living with other speakers of the language

Q29. Mr. Krashen believes that people learn the language more successfully if …
A) they start learning the language at infancy.
B) they are not afraid of making mistakes.
C) they are determined to win the battle.
D) they have strong reasons to learn the language.

Q30. Middle-aged language learners usually …

A) have curiosity to help them succeed.
B) feel relaxed in the conversation.
C) have the wrong approach to the language.
D) make a good use of books and discs.
