Technical Details

Original research papers are invited for the presentation in the

seminar. The selected articles will be published in the UGC recognized National Seminar on
journals Bio Science Research Bulletin (bio sciences related) and Bulletin
of Pure and Applied Sciences (chemical sciences related). Full papers in
the prescribed journal format should be submitted on or before the 15th of
December 2017 to iicbgac@gmail.com. The articles should be in clear,
coherent and concise English in MS word in Verdana/Times New Roman
font. Author/s should also certify that the paper has not been published or

submitted for publication elsewhere.

Being the retirement year of Dr. K. Murukan and Prof. S. Shanavas,

the two legends in the eld of teaching and research in Botany and
Chemistry respectively, this seminar will be an appropriate platform to
say adieu to them. Former students and colleagues of both the Professors
will be invited and a rendezvous is planned on the third day.
Dr. K. Murukan has done his graduation and post-graduation from
University College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He pursued his
doctorate in Plant Sciences from the University of Kerala under the
guidance of Dr. C. Mohankumar. He is a life member of various national
and international societies. He has produced 11 Ph.D.s and currently
seven students are doing doctoral research under him. He has published
more than 170 papers in reputed journals and presented more than 275
papers in national and international conferences and symposia.
Presently he is the Principal of Government Arts College,
26th to 28th
Thiruvananthapuram.
Prof. S. Shanavas did his post-graduation from the Aligarh
February 2018
Muslim University. He is a renowned gure in the chemistry academia of
the state. He started his teaching career in 1992 and was part of this (First Notification)
college from 1997 to 2000 and then from 2006 till date. He is a prominent
gure in the academic and allied activities in the college. Presently he is
the Vice-principal of Government Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Dear Sir/ Madam,
The rst decade of the 21st century has witnessed
tremendous technological innovations in the elds of
chemical and biological sciences. The improvements in
technology would lead to acquire and synthesize novel
biological/molecular diversity to a greater extent of
specicity and thereby improving the accessibility from the
newly acquired diversity pool. The goal is to create
collections of molecules with greater depth of diversity than
found so far in nature, as well as with types of diversity that
may not exist in nature. The novel molecules generated
include enzymes with enhanced or altered activities,
molecules composed of “unnatural” amino acids, novel
DNA molecules using directed in vitro molecular evolution,
or simply collect previously uncharacterized sequences
directly from nature. The use of directed design begins with
a more dened, preexisting understanding of the desired
end product and its molecular features such as structure-
aided design of small-molecule ligands; the genetic
engineering of viruses or microbes; and, the emerging eld
of synthetic biology. Technologies driven by efforts to gain a
more complete understanding of complex biological
systems and an ability to manipulate such systems can be
used for manipulation of biological systems. Production,
delivery, and packaging technologies are driven by efforts
in the pharmaceutical, agriculture, and healthcare sectors
to improve capabilities for producing, reengineering, or
delivering bio derived products products and miniaturizing
these processes.
All these improvements are possible and progress
only by the frequent exchange of ideas from these diverse
elds of classical sciences. Young minds entering into the
eld of high quality research should be enlightened with
the possibilities of diverse thinking and benets of inter
disciplinary approaches. In this line, Departments of
Chemistry, Botany and Biotechnology of Government Arts
College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala is organizing a
three day national seminar on Insights into the
Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Chemical and Bio
Sciences from 26th to 28th February 2018. Invited lectures
and paper presentations will be the major events of the
seminar.
Government Arts College Thiruvananthapuram is one of the prestigious academic
institutions in Kerala with a long and glorious history. Originally this college was a part of
His Highness the Maharaja's College, Thiruvananthapuram, and it was separated from the
parent institution in 1924 and named as His Highness the Maharaja's college of Arts. With
the founding of the University of Travancore in 1937, the two colleges were amalgamated
into the Maharaja's University college Thiruvananthapuram and the College at Thycaud
functioned as a part of the University College. In 1949, with the introduction of intermediate
course, the college came to be called the University Intermediate College. It was named as
Government Arts College with effect from the 28th of July 1971. Today the College offers UG
Programmes in Commerce, Economics, Botany & Biotechnology and Physics and PG
Programmes in Commerce, Economics, English, Analytical Chemistry and Statistics. The
Commerce department offers Ph.D. programme also.
