DECLARATION
I am student FIKER SISAY with ID No ENG/R/12/480.currently a 4th year
architecture student in WOLLEGA University College of engineering in
architecture & urban planning faculty architecture department. I attend internship
practice at the organization of NKS architecture and engineering consulting plc
limited enterprise during the first semester from Oct 1 –Jan 10 2008E.C academic
year. I would serve this organization to the best of my potential by putting my
theoretical knowledge into practice.
I attend in this organization to meet the current situation of the
technology in construction and design of different types of building practically with
the supporting of nks and I would like to engage my potential & knowledge in
advanced manner in practices by making me challenged problem solving and
forwarding my idea in to qualified and practical work.

First of all I would like to thank the Almighty God which give me strength and wisdom in

every step of my life.

 Firstly, my greatest gratitude is going to nks architect and engineering consultancy plc. For
having given me the opportunity to undertake 100 days internship class in their working area.
It was a very good learning experience for me to have worked at this area.
 Secondly, my greatest gratitude is going to architect kedir Mohammed and Nurhussen yimer
who is supervisor of nks architects and engineer’s consultant p.l.c. he is a person that everyone
wants to work with. I cannot describe in words his guidance, encouragement and expertise.
Always, he was generously teaching me that how someone can works peacefully with work
colleagues. He was every time tried to overcome the challenges that we faced during the
internship period.
 Thirdly, I would also thank all teachers of wollega University School of Architecture and
Urban planning who brought me to my present performance and shape me like this during the
last three successive years and also I want to say thanks draftsman bruk desalegn who is
working mostly in AutoCAD works and detail drawings.

EXECUTIVE SUMMERY
I did my internship at nks architects and engineers consulting p.l.c. This internship report
has my overall experience of the internship program, which was held within the specified
time period from oct 01 –jan 10.it includes how I made it to be there, and being an intern
having different experiences. Complementary to this, during my internship period, I have
participated in different activities like design, drafting, painting Photoshop, rendering, supervise
on the site, editing and some other activities. During my stay I have learned a lot from my
hosting company. Generally I have got different practice and theoretical skill. This helped me to
grip the gap between the school life and practice world.
I believe that the main objective of this internship is not only profession based
academics, but also addressing the secular life, how everybody should face after they
graduated from the university. Here I have listed all the pros and cons of the overall internship
experience and finally I have put conclusion and Recommendations.

INTRODUCTION
The objectives of this report are to introduce or give some information what I
done during my practical or internship period based on its practical education to department
of architecture. The report is a summary of the 100days I spent as an intern. It includes
company's background, main projects and clients, my overall experience and what I
gained from that. Challenges I faced and how I solved it, and projects I worked on within
the company.

CHAPTER ONE

1. BACKGROUND OF THE HOSTING COMPANY

1.1 INTRODUCTION
NKS Architects and Engineers Consulting plc. Is located in Dessie Arada sub city around
the Piazza at Seid Yasin bldg. The company established in 2007 as a national designing and
consulting firm that exclusively represents dynamism and commitment, currently registered as
CATEGORY-V Consulting Architects and Engineers. The company confirmed by a number of
companies, the federal government, regional states and non-governmental organizations.

NKS Architects and Engineers Consulting plc. Is a dynamic organization of innovative

professionals who share a common goal to render the best and most effective services to the
demanding construction industry, It is sensitive to both cost containment and service levels.

MAIN PRODUCTS OR SERVICES

Designing: encompasses architectural, structural, electrical, sanitary, specifications

and bill of quantity.

Consulting: they assist in consulting projects before starting design through careful,
examination of the parameters.

Market estimates and sales: they make cost estimates professionally and
independently. They view cost control as a design consideration not as constraints.

Supervision: before designing the project supervise on the site.

Engineering & supporting software’s

The company uses engineering & supportive software‘s that are used by all professionals which
are the most updated.

CHAPTER TWO
2. OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

2.1. JOINING OF THE COMPANY

In the middle of 3rd year second semester class we got the application letter for internship
from the school of Architecture and Urban Design. I didn’t get a hosting company that satisfy me
and also because of some companies reject our school students including me because student from
other universities apply first. Due to those reason and other disabilities like we can’t search in the
work days because of our schedules was busy I did not find any company in the summer. The
school should give the application letter on 3rd year first semester or before to find the company
that satisfy us. So, I have been searching a hosting company in the summer and I apply to Dessie
arada sub city piazza 03 and I got in to nks architects and engineers consultant plc. And I started
the intern from summer.

2.2. Section of the Company I have been working in

I have been working in design section in the company. Every design works are done in this
section are:-

Creating architectural design

making some adjustment on previous design work
checking out finalized AutoCAD drafting works,
consulting to the projects,
Site supervision or visitation to follow up the construction process

2.3. Work piece or task I have been executing

Actually I assigned from the company to work with consultants but consultation is not easy
task to perform especially for students because it needs experienced and further specialized person
in the field but I didn’t get it as difficult task to do because of it is parallel to what we learned in
the class. the consultant main work at the site is controlling time, cost, quality and safety of workers
so those work needs inspection, test conducting and taking different measures when the contractor

don‘t execute it properly. Their main work is to advice and provides a better idea how the project
will finish with a minimum cost, time and quality.

Generally I have been working in the two sections as mentioned above. I classify the work in to
two office work and site works, mostly the work I have been executing on the site is supervising
the work as a site engineer and on the office is creating architectural design as an architect.

2.3.1. OFFICE WORK

In my 100 days internship period I experience Office works that are worked mostly at the site this
includes some tasks performed by GIS expert, Architects and Urban Planners. Such as:

 Consulting designs
 Rectify designs
 Give information to the client

And there is also other tasks like Reading and interpreting drawings. Drawings are the means by
which the designer conveys the physical, quantitative, and visual description of the project to the
contractor. The drawings are a two-dimensional representation of the physical structure that meets
the objectives of the owner. They are also known as plans or blue prints.

IN THE SITE THERE ARE 4 TYPES OF DRAWING;

1. Architectural drawing
2. Structural drawing
3. Sanitary drawing
4. Electrical installation drawing

These drawings are the main language between the architect, designer and any worker at the
site or office to build the model in position as specified by the designer and the client, based on
the agreement. Thus to work as an engineer in the construction site it is mandatory knowing
drawings and any other specification. Drawings are the most common means of communication
for all types and sizes of project. Thus I understand each drawing and knew every symbol
abbreviation for every section and I able to communicate with different workers using it.

I spent an interesting working time at office with many professionals. At Most of the time I was
working in office designing buildings and to evaluate different documents with the consultants. In

addition to this I have got the chance to work with the client or customers to discuss their
satisfactions on the design.

2.3.2. Site work

The site work was the very important task for me because the internship main objective lies over
it and I have gain many knowledge from the site like communication skill, handling workers,
management skill etc. within four month I have the ability to see many works from the project.

The work task I have been executing at site is:

 Supervising of works
 Inspecting the worked element and how they work
 Checking the work based on the given check list
 Testing materials

At this office the site visit is two days with in a week which is Wednesday and Friday. At the site
the main work at the site is controlling time, cost and quality so those work needs inspection, test
conducting and taking different measures when the contractor don‘t execute it properly. And also
we visit site to do a new site plan for every individuals that already have it or not because of the
new master plan it has to be rectified.

After these two weeks experience that used me to know how the office roll i.e., the bureaucracy;
how to approve designs and how to give information to the client about their land property, I apply
to NKS consulting architects and Engineers plc. to get more experience other than these tasks I
have been performed.

NKS Consulting Architects and Engineers plc. is located in Dessie Arada sub city around the so
called Piazza specifically at the Seid Yasin BLDG as I mentioned detail in the previous chapter. It
is a dynamic organization of innovative professionals who share a common goal to render the best
and most effective services to the demanding construction industry, which is sensitive to both cost
containment and service levels.
