Establishment of Takakura compost model project at Seethawaka Pradeshiya
Saba area in year 2014.

Before the implementation of the Takakura compost method, waste auditing at the Seethawaka
Praddeshiya Saba area with JICA Volunteer Ms.TomoNagono.

Takakura compost method implementing at the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Saba staff by the guidance of
JICA volunteer Ms.TomoNagono.
Making fermentation solutions and introducing the Takakura compost method, to a selected 10 sample
households in Seethawaka Pradeshiya Saba area with JICA volunteers, Ms. Shizuka Yashimoto, Ms.
Tomo Nagono and Mr. Ryo Iino.
After evaluating all the existing Takakura compost model cities by the JICA Volunteers group,
Seethawaka Pradeshiya Saba area was selected as the best Takakura model city.
I carried out an experiment in moisture control in the Takakura compost bin and maggot control using
neem leaf and oil (AzadirachtaIndica). Neem Oil is used to manufacture neem oil insecticide as it
contains azadirachtin which effects over 600 species of pests including insects, nematodes, fungi and
viruses and is completely safe to non-target organisms like beneficial predators, honey bees, pollinators,
fish, birds, cattle and human beings. But as per the observations, neem oil effects microorganisms for a
short period and after that reactivation was very slowly. I was forwarded my observations and sample
of neem oil to Dr. Koji Takakura for his studies.

Focusing to minimize waste at the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Saba area, giving 150
Takakura compost baskets in year 2015.

Door to door project monitoring

Participating island wide waste management awareness programs, as a resource person
with National Solid waste supporting center, for sharing experiences. These programmes
were co-ordinated by Mr. D.P. Indaka, who is the Assistant Director of National solid
waste supporting center, programs were held in the areas of Colombo, Kaluthara,
Gampaha, Kurunegala, Kandy, Galle and Anuradhapura.

Moreover, received personal invitations from President Secretariat, Army, Air Force,
Civil Security Department, Schools, Nursing Training Centers, Sri Lanka Productivity
Secretariat, Divisional Secretariats and The Social & Economic Development Centre
(SEDEC) to held awareness and practical programmes.

01. The 2000 Plaza Residencies - Madiwela

The 2000 Plaza Residencies situated in the Maharagama Urban area, consisting of 142
condominium apartments. Daily waste generation of the site is nearly 370 Kg. and out of
total capacity nearly 300 Kg. is organic kitchen and food waste. The project was
implemented in January 2016 and currently the project is successfully functioning. Waste
segregation achievement percentage is nearly 95% and composting is also 90% well
doing. The project was the Sri Lanka’s first Takakura method mini compost center.

Before implementation the project in The 2000 Plaza Residencies, garbage collecting
area.

Non-biodegradable waste segregation improvement.

Established 36 bins, which are three colour system for 12 floors, near the garbage
collecting locations in each floor.

05. Takakura method open windrow compost project in Edinborough Food
Products (Pvt) Ltd. – Located in Halbarawa, Homagama.
I observed the situation of the organization during my site visits in 2016. The
organization did not possess a waste management policy. However the
organization displayed great enthusiasm and efforts in solid waste management.
They were handling waste materials quite soundly with a minimum level of 3R
concept.

The organization could achieve zero waste goals from implemented strategic plan.
Average organic waste generation is about 942.01 Kg per day and Non organic
waste generation is about 205.48 Kg per day. It could be a great achievement
from the project, which is designed an organic farm near the factory premises.
The total waste management analysis of the company is as follows:

Waste to Composting
Waste Management Analysis
Waste to Recycling
0% 2%
Waste to Combution
5% 1% 1%
Solid Waste to landfill
9%
Liquid Waste to Dispose

Food & Kitchen Waste to

Waste to Reuse 82%
05. Research and development of the carrier.
At present, I am carrying out experiments with lack of resources, to design and to
introduce a suitable bin for Takakura compost method to face the existing waste
crisis in Sri Lanka.

06. Under constructing ongoing project in Devi Balika College – Located in
Colombo 08.
This is Takakura method mini compost site, that the upper half of the shelter covered by
roofing sheets and the bottom part covered by chicken mesh and green mesh for avoid
flies. This construction is my own structural design. There are fully aerated pipe lines
with five partitions build for waste put in to five week days.
