­In  1885  after  the  railway  was  finished  and  large  amounts  of  cheap  labor wasn't 
needed,  the  Canadian  government  tried  to  discourage  Chinese immigration by 
placing a $50 Head Tax on them. In 1900 the tax was raised to$100, and again in 
1903 it was raised to $500. The government collected over$23 million dollars from the 
Chinese Head Tax 

­With the outbreak of WWI workers were needed again. In the last 2 years of the 
war, Chinese immigrant numbers increased to 4000 a year! 

­After the war ended and soldiers went back to Canada to look for work, there was 
another  back  lash  against  the  Chinese.  The  Chinese  had  moved  in owning  land 
and  farms  which  was  a  bigger  cause  for  alarm  then  their  sheer numbers

­On July 1st, 1923, Canada passed the Chinese exclusion bill, which stopped
Chinese immigration for a quarter of a century, it is known as 'Humiliation Day' ­In 
2006, Stephen Harper gave a formal apology in the house of commons for the Head 
Tax and exclusion on the Chinese
