0041 BRIDGE TEAM MANAGEMENT (BTM) PROCEDURES

1. BRIDGE TEAM MANAGEMENT (BTM) USE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT


It is important that the master and the watch keeping officers are completely familiar
with all navigational and communications equipment, charts and publication on board.
Where equipment is concerned, errors can occur for variety of reasons and poor
equipment calibration may be significant. In this case of integrated system, it is possible
that the failure of one component could have unpredictable consequence for the system
as a whole. It is important to ensure that electronic navigational equipment is carefully
synchronised with the appropriate alternative method.

2. RECORD OF EQUIPMENT
The record of equipment for the cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate (Form E)
Section 3 must be same as actual equipment fitted on board.
Manufacture instruction manual must be available for all fitting navigation equipment.
The Master and Watch keeping officers must familiar and be able to demonstrate the
operation of bridge control and navigational equipment. And also able to perform the
procedures of periodical test and checks of equipment, such as daily, weekly, monthly
test.

3. EQUIPMENTS AND DEMONSTRATION PROCEDURE


a. Position fixing devices – GPS receiver
Knowledge on GPS system, WGS 84 datum, the limitation and accuracy of
GPS system, as refer from ALRS volumes.
b. Echo sounder
Proper marking on recording chart, adjustment of gain, adjustment of draft, the
squat and UKC)
c. Radar
Officers must be able to switch on and obtain realistic radar picture and able to
interpret the radar display targets, i.e., Racon, Buoys)
d. ARPA
Officer must be able to explain the various functions of equipment, static and
dynamic data entry, various type of display layout, and information of other
ship)
e. Standard Magnetic Compass
Record of compass error check at every watch and every major alteration of
course is up to date. The deviation form the curve and the calculated deviation
shall be in close range.

f. Gyro compass
The reading should match the alignment of the berth, the repeaters must match
the main gyro heading. The gyro error record is up to date.
g. The Rudder Angle indicators
All indicators must be matched with actual rudder angle; the check must be
recorded in movement book.
h. Distance and speed indicators/recorder
Officers must be able to operate the basic functions, resetting of total distance
etc.
i. Navigational lights , emergency source, the power failure alarm
The officers must know the change-over procedures between two sets of
navigational lights, and change over procedure to emergency source in case of
blackout.
j. VHF radios
Officers must know the operation of VHF radios and be able to communicate
using VHF radios in communication with external parties, port control, VTS.
Officers must be able to demonstrate the internal DSC transmission test
between VHF DSC equipment.
k. VDR, S-VDR,
Officers must be able to demonstrate the test of all operational indicators as per
maker’s instruction and must know the equipment input into VDR.
l. AIS
The equipment is calibrated, tested, and maintained according to the
manufacture’s recommendations and regulatory requirement.

Maintain a record showing dates and descriptions of AIS calibration, testing,


maintenance, and operation.

Pre-departure and pre-arrival checklists include checking AIS for proper


operation and inputs.

After anchorage or mooring, AIS is adjusted to transmit the correct status.

m. Bridge communication to steering gear room


Officers must be able to use the communication between bridge and steering
gear room by using emergency battery telephone. This should be tested at each
emergency steering drill.
n. Day Light Signalling Light (Aldis Lamp).
Officers must be able to communicate using Day Light Signalling Light by
Morse Code and procedure of calling and aiming to another ship. The battery
shall be fully charged at all time.
o. ECDIS
Ships are installed with ECDIS as per applicable regulations for ship type. For
detailed procedures on operation, passage planning, alarms and tests, safety
parameters etc. refer to section NAV-0080 in this Manual.

4. ASSIGNMENT OF DUTIES
Master has the ultimate responsibility for safety of the ship and delegation of authority
to officer of the watch should be clearly assigned, limited to those duties that can be
performed effectively, and clearly prioritised.
The OOW should also be asked to confirm that they understand the tasks and duties
assigned to them.
The details of assignment must be posted on Bridge and the positive reporting and
recording on events while undertaking tasks and duties is one way of monitoring the
performance of the bridge electronic equipment.
