Laboratory Skills and Safety Date:________________________

Aim: Preparing solutions and measuring temperature

Safety and techniques
Check the steps off as you read and understand them.
Do a drawing that illustrates at least one aspect on each list.

Safety with Solutions
1. Wear safety goggles, even over prescription glasses.
2. Read the label and note solution name,
concentration and safety.
3. If a solution is spilt on skin wash immediately with
running water. Remove affected clothing.
4. If acid or base gets into eye, wash immediately
and refer to medical staff.
5. When diluting always add acid to water.
6. Do not carry bottles by the neck.
7. Never taste chemicals
8. Waft chemicals, never sniff.
9. Some solutions change temperature when solids are
dissolved in water so be observant.
10. Always clean up your workstation.

Technique
Weighing solids on an electronic balance
1. Never manually push down on the pan of the
electronic balance.
2. Gently place one empty glass reagent bottle on the
balance pan.
3. Bring the jar of solids next to the balance and bottle.
a. Use a teaspoon to carefully transfer the stated
mass of solid to the reagent bottle.
b. Avoid spills.
4. Replace the lid of the jar of solids.

Technique
Measuring liquid volumes
1. A graduated cylinder is used to measure liquid
volumes. Choose the most accurate one for the job.
2. Make sure glassware is clean.
3. Compare the bottom of the liquid meniscus in the
glass container with the graduated line on the
container.
4. Keep your eye level with the bottom of the meniscus
and the graduated line.

Materials and Apparatus
jars of labelled solids thermometer
electronic balance measuring cylinders
plastic teaspoons protective mat
reagent bottle labels

Method
Observe all the safety and technique steps.
Label the reagent bottles with the prepared reagent bottle labels
Safely transfer the required mass of correct solid to the clean empty reagent bottle.
Safely measure 50 mL of water and slowly pour it onto the solid in the reagent bottle. Replace lid and
swirl the solution.
Use a thermometer and measure the temperature of the solution. Record it in the Results table.
Measure 150 mL water and add to the solution in each reagent bottle. Screw on the lid and invert the
several times until all solid has dissolved.
Record observations in a table.

Conclusion:
1. Describe any patterns observed in the data.

Evaluation

1. Outline one problem you had transferring the entire mass of the solid to the reagent bottle.

2. Complete a summary of this Skills and Safety Laboratory session in your science workbook,
include the heading and date. Discuss concepts of observation, exothermic and endothermic
reactions.
